As a follow up to the What Did You Order from the Starter thread, what did you preorder? 4.5? 6? 8? 10? Maybe you ordered a Starter model after the Starter ended?

For now all I was able to preorder was the 10, but when those funds add up I plan on going back for more. I really wanted to add some color to my collection, but ended up keeping my 10 uniform with my others with black handles and black sheath. When all my orders roll in I'll have black in all three delicious flavors: G10, linen and canvas.

So, what ya got coming?

Starter order thread:

4.5 Bushcraft. I can't wait and I'm not really sure when it will be available.

I want to order the 4.5 but momma_toothpick says no till I get my 7/7, & 3.5 in. But I will order a couple neckers when they re-release them. I think once she handles the new ones were gonna get her a 4.1. I wish S! Had purple (her favorite color) sheaths and handles, I would have got her one already.

I have preordered the 3.5 with burgundy linen for the wife, and once I recoup a bit from my spending sprees (and my wife talks to me again) I plan on getting a 6.0 with green canvas. I also have a 5.0 on the way and can't wait to grab one of the raptor talons(necker II) when they come back up.

I do not own any S!K yet so I am a newbie. I ordered the 4.5, 8 and 10 this time and ordered the 7/7 during the Starter. The toughest part is the wait now.

Back when Guy was first starting out and was a fellow Pennsylvanian, he had a pretty rough start that really hurt his business. His pre-orders were being delayed like two and three times and more of what he anticipated when taking the orders. Much of this was the result of a bad business partner according to Guy, but I was really concerned for him and Survive! during that time. I think that I recall that he stated that was not going to do the pre-order any longer. I have been away for quite some time, so I missed what the Startup was all about. It looks as though he now has a better handle on things, and feels confident in going back to the pre-order model.

I always thought that the model was a good one. The buyer got a deal on the knife (interest), and Guy was able to raise capital to finance the production by paying interest to his costumers rather than a bank. Guy was a one man show there for a while, and he was trying to get product out the door as fast as he could, but delays and no communication resulted in some pretty angry customers at the time. I am just curious if y'all can help me fill in the blanks from then until now. I know that he now has Ellie to help out on the communication front, and really this is all customers really wanted in the first place. I think that everyone understood that crap happens, they just want to be informed of it when it does.

So I was surprised to see on the Survive! website that Guy is taking pre-orders again.

I ordered a Starter 5.1 a couple days after the program officially ended, but their website was still set up to take the orders that way, so I was able to get my free upgrades and save the 5%! As I stated in another thread here, I ordered one of the new Fiddleback Forge camp knives last night in a moment of weakness over the new GSO-6 because it's a bit larger all around (12.25" OAL & 6.5" choil-less blade) and because I'll have it early next week...but I know I'll be ordering a 4.5 soon, and possibly an 8 - I'm so happy Guy listened to his forum family on that one as the 10 was just too big for me, though I really liked the idea of having a big knife of that shape and material makeup. As SK grows as a company, they are doing a fine job of anticipating what their customers want and giving it to them....and with their new full time employee and in-house equipment and improved strategies, they're going to be able to get us what we want much quicker....which is HUGE! Honestly, if the GSO-6 was something I could have ordered as an in-stock item, I would have ordered that last night instead of the FF camper, even though the FF was the exact size I wanted. Anyhow, no biggie, I and so many of us are happy to wait and we're still ordering other models as quickly as Guy can imagine them. Oh, and the other knife I've almost ordered so many times is the 7/7....so that's the other model I'll be preordering in the near future.

I'd be interested in what you think of the FF Camp. I have two of Andy's O1 versions, and I like it very much, but I like the 3V steel much better. I'm thinking of unloading his completely hand made O1 version for a Custom shop 3V version. Honestly though for me, the FF Camp, the GSO 7/7 and 10 (I own all 3) are too big to EDC. But for camping chores, I prefer the GSO 10. I might even like the GSO 12 better. My GSO 7/7 has the false grind, so it is not as heavy as the standard. But it is still a big knife. Mine is mounted on my weight bearing MOLLE vest, and doubles as a big fighter and utility option. If the knife is going to be thrown into, or mounted on, a pack, then the GSO 10 is the one I want to have.

Did you see the page at the above link? It talks a little about the starter and reasoning behind it.

In February Guy had some 5.1's available, but they were left overs from a bigger run (I think), so there were not many available and sold out in hours. People who did not get to order one or ordered one in their second choice color or odered a factory second instead of factory first totally lost it and the whole thing turned into a giant whine and cheese festival. Instead of reacting like I would have Guy found a win-win by letting people order his new line of knives with great incentives and discounts while he got funds to get a new location and equipment. I was surprised he did this after reading about how nasty people got with the first round of preorders, but that didn't stop me from ordering everything I could afford
Now the preorders continue as do the new models!

Someone correct my inaccuracies and fill in what I missed!

McVeyMac, I completely agree with you on the steel. If the mid-tech FF camper were in 01 or A2, I would have admired the design and kept on looking...but the 3V sold me. I also get you on the blade size preference, and for me this FF happens to be exactly what I was looking for in materials, design, and size....which is what it takes these days to get me to buy a non-SK knife! And if you look at the GSO-6 and this mid-tech FF camp side-by-side, there is a striking resemblance...but unlike the Ambush Alpha, I think this one is just a happy coincidence!

As the saying goes, the best survival knife is the one that you have on you when you find yourself in a survival situation. In my case, I always have a 4" FF Sneaky Pete in CPM 154 in an inside the pocket sheath during the work week (and assorted other smaller fixed blade knives). On the weekends it is either the GSO 4.1, 5.1 or FF Hunter or some other FF knife in the 4 to 5" length carried on the belt. When I camp, which has not been much lately, I will mount the GSO 10 on the pack, or I will throw the GB Small Forrest Axe (or smaller) in the pack. If I take the axe, I carry the GSO 5.1 on my belt. If I take the GSO 10, I carry the GSO 4.1 in M390. I'm getting pretty long in the tooth, so I no longer go for days over and through rough terrain on my camping expeditions where I am counting every ounce. But, I always have a fixed blade knife on my person someplace, even if I am working in a suit and tie.

The GSO line is just plain good. Andy Roy makes some beautiful functional tools, but when my life depends on it, I would rather have a GSO. I just wish that I could belt carry at work, but that is another story.

Thanks for the link, I had not read that thread.

I knew I should not have come back here and gotten back up to speed with what Guy and Ellie are up to. I just placed pre-orders for a Guy Seiferd Original 6 and 8, both in 3V. I suppose I will have to get the redesigned versions of what I already have at some point. I am a sucker for big knives. I do love them.

Now the big question, when do you anticipate that they will start showing up on the Friday updates?

I just visited the SK site and took another look at the current GSOs...I don't know why, but I never really considered the 2.7. I think now that I've had my 3.5 for a while and absolutely love it, I'm more open to an even smaller GSO, and that 2.7 looks like the jam. And it looks like it's going into production in just one week, which I believe means we don't have much time remaining to get one ordered!....am I right with that??

Blanks will start cutting 8-14 according to the 1st Friday update I got today. Not sure when they are considered "In Production."

VD, do it! I love my izula which is very similar specs to the 2.7. I do cherish my 3.5, but I'm looking foward to being able to pop my 2.7 in my pocket or carry it around my neck.

Any chance the terrific people at SURVIVE! would consider selling the ball chain that comes with the neckers in the supplies section of their website? I'd buy one for sure!

Back on topic now... MVM, good catch on the time line. Maybe when the new 5.1's near completion we'll get to see what the process is like from steel cutting to sharpened, assembled and in my mailbox. I'd guess there are many, many steps that need to happen once a model is deemed "in production". And this is magnified because handles, sheaths and shop work needs to move harmoniously when the blanks materialize. Does that sound more or less right?

I was responding to VD regarding the GSO 2.7, and when the pre-order will end and "in production" status starts. It makes sense to me that production starts when they start to cut blanks. As you very correctly point out that the time from the start of production until the knives start shipping is complex, and very dependent on the number of orders needing to be filled. I think that VD just wants to know when the preorder will end so that he can get his in. I just don't know when they are considered "in production."

Now I get it. I should read more carefully!

Given that bar the 12 I chose the 3 least ordered models, I am appreciating the bump in release order on one. I am getting a comparable necker from another small company. Looks like they will come at a similar time. I wonder who shall win backup backup time!
