What Did You Sharpen Today?

Bestech Falco, a Kombou(?) design and one I've had a while. I've always liked the size, ergonomics, blade shape, etc. I've never cared for the shiny, satin blade finish and polished hardware. I acid etched and stonewashed the blade and dulled the screw finish yesterday and sharpened today.PXL_20250531_233556841.MP.jpg

That handle is as stunning as the blade.

I didn't sharpen anything today! It's Saturday so the shop it closed but it's been a busy week. One regular dropped off a box with 20 knives and ten chisels on top of my normal stuff. Did some kind of food processor blades for the butcher next door, haven't seen the machine but I got the blades sharp. I just got a new AC unit for the shop and got a new chisel jig in the mail.

I'm not sure I'm going to sharpen anything today but I'm heading over to the shop to install a new air conditioning unit (much needed!). I just got a Tiger's Teeth sharpening machine to do circular saw blades so that's going to the shop now as well. If the AC install goes smoothly I might do the chisels that are waiting for me, too.

The AC is installed! I didn't have time to work on any knives but I examined the box a customer dropped off Friday and they're nice blades. One is a Mel Purdue Benchmade and there's a couple of MAC kitchen knives. I'll do them in the morning plus a handful of chisels a regular dropped off last week.

Today was a batch of beat-up chisels and some nice kitchen knives. The latter also left off a Mel Purdue Benchmade in CPM154. A very nice knife, probably the nicest Benchmade I've seen. The grind was very good, something I can't always say for Benchmade. I had a bit of spare time so I decided to do it on stones so I busted out the Edge Pro Matrix stones.

Sharpened up this Tojiro DP 120mm petty on Atoma Diamond Plates. Freehand sharpening is so therapeutic. I sharpened this dry. Nothing to really set up. No water and mess. No angle to measure. Just lay down the blade at that familiar angle and have at it.

I did three of the hammer/axe combos that framers use for roof shakes- I can't recall what they call them. Not a framing hammer but something like that. The guy that brought them in also had a few old hatchets and a Woodsman's Pal, a really old one with the metal scabbard!

Got my two-dot Buck 112 back from the SPA treatment about a month ago, which included putting on a new "Edge 2000" on the 440C blade. I've been dreading that first sharpening because I didn't want to mess up my new edge. Not really sure why I was concerned, because I'm normally not reluctant to work on any knife, new or old. Anyway, I decided today that it needed to be done, although clearly it didn't need more than a light touch-up. I marked the edge with a Sharpie then made a few light passes on an Eze-Lap 1200 grit diamond. Didn't take long to get the feel for the angle. It's not quite up to how good it was when it got back from the SPA, but now that I'm over the initial nerves and take another go at it tomorrow. (Picture taken shortly after getting back from Buck.)

Continued working on it today with my Eze-Lap 600 grit and quickly got it pretty close to how it came back from the SPA. :)

I was pretty busy today! The shop next door to mine is a butcher shop and he brought me his knives today. I had a box of pretty nice kitchen knives waiting for me that were dropped off yesterday afternoon after I left for an appointment. Three customers came in with semi-urgent stuff they wanted me to expedite including one guy that was going camping this evening and wanted his knives done before the trip. Most of them didn't need any repairs to speak of (no broken tips, etc) and were in decent shape. Luckily I got a case of new Cubitron belts yesterday and some very coarse grit ceramic belts the day before. Occasionally I get a super dull one that benefits from starting @ 60 grit to apex the blade, then 120 Cubitron > A30 Trizact > strop.
