What do i have ? Looking for axe knowledge . . .

You need to get a Photo bucket account its free then copy and paste you pictures my friend

Still not working. Keep trying it takes a while to figure out. If the link starts and ends with the photo should read into the forum.

Welcome to BladeForums

That's quite a collection. It's hard to tell makers from the photos but you have a lot of fun ahead of you getting them refinished. When they are cleaned up a little, post some photos of makers marks and you'll get lots of good advice on this forum. There are a lot of talented people here.

Just acquired all these...i have a few beauties already done. One being a hand forged J.M Warren single bit from Troy N.Y.

Looks like you've got some fairly interesting handles there.

I've never seen a fireman's axe like that before, interesting stuff. Can't wait to see them all refurbished

What do you have there - I would say you have a combo of a hot mess and some interesting pieces, and when I say hot mess, I mean that as a compliment. Looks like a great haul - a good mix of all kinds of patterns, manufacturers, time ranges, uses, etc. Is it safe to say that is from all one estate/person?

Quite a pile of interesting and useful (and what ordinary people would call) junk. Same source, I'm thinking, since there are skinned branches pretending to be handles stuffed into the eyes of a bunch of them. I do see, from 'lo-buck-purchase gloaters' skirting this forum, that collectors will want you to devote an hour or two toward cleaning up the heads in order for you to be able to re-sell them 'for peanuts'. Meaningful stamps seem to be worth much more than the condition or metallurgy of the heads.
Good work on your part nevertheless if only to keep this stuff out of the recycle or landfill.
Only said this because I'm discouraged. A $20 new 'made in China' plastic handled axe has more appeal to a garage sale/lo-bid Yuppie than an old classic 'Beauty' with a history and broken or ad-lib handle.

I am new to the axe thing...what are collectors looking for? How can you tell whats worth money and whats junk...

For instance, In that first picture, all those double bits look good. The single bit in the center at the bottom of the first picture is badly worn and mushroomed. Not worth much if anything. The other single bit to the left is in better shape but is a Michigan pattern which is the lowest in demand. The upper right looks like possibly an old Maine axe which some on this forum really like. No names are worth less than factory marked generally. The broad hatchets you have look good too from a user/restoration standpoint.

The big money is in rare embossing or mint axes. Axes like you have are still common but have a value as a user. I would be extremely happy to find a pile like that.
