What do makers carry?

Wow, I started this thread to see some worn out beat up blades made by all of you great makers. I didn't know it would get this much attention. I say to each his own. If you make $1000.00 knives I wouldn't dare carry one to cut cardboard. If you don't make folders than obviously you will probably have another makers or production knife stashed away in your pocket. Me, as a consumer, would not be swayed in my decision to purchase a knife from somebody that didn't carry their own work, but would enjoy the chance of handling the knife if they did. It is a good selling point, but not one that would affect my decision either way. Now lets see some pictures!

I try not to Self Promote too much.

I just dont feel comfortable Self Promoting or saying "Hey Look at My Gear"

We try not to Draw Unnecessary Attention to our website www.TexasPimp.com

I do make an Exception in regards to Self Promotion from time to time.

I Carry a Snody Knife.

Right now this is my favorite carry/utlity....

Have a great week everyone..

:D That is a great post Mike. Now stop arguing and bashing makers, will you? :D

the maker uses a Buck to go hunting with, why would the customer think anything OTHER than that, in the maker's view, a production knife is "good enough".

Five Stars....

I needed a reason to smile ..

Thanks...this post gave me a smile and the lift I needed to catch my second wind this afternoon in the knife shop

Have a good 1....

Certain circumstances aside, such as a gift if it had a personal history, I strive to carry knives I make as much to promote as to learn.

That makes good sense to me, Stuart. What you can learn from using your own knives is of incalculable value.

I carried this today. what I call my "Grimlin" pattern.
Its the Top one in this picture.

You'd probably get more answers from makers if you posted in the makers forums:

Shop Talk - BladeSmith Questions and Answers - BladeForums.com

Knife Maker's Gallery - BladeForums.com

For myself, I'm working on a replacement for my current EDC. When it's finished I'll post pictures here.

Although the conversation has strayed a little from the original topic, I think it's been good.

Considering this is mainly a collector driven sub forum I can agree with you on this Kevin. If you would spend any time in the wilderness survival forum or any of the other bushcraft/survival forums out there you would really see some dedicated use of custom knives. And I mean hard use. Yes, they aren't high dollar customs but custom made knives from respectable makers in that market area.
Scott

Hi Scott.
I'm certainly not trying to say there aren't still dedicated or "real" uses for knives but that times have changed from when a man used his knife for just about everything. Very often his quality of life if not life itself was determined by his knife and ability to use it in performing lots of tasks.

Now days I bet it would be an accurate statement that the vast majority of the general public hardly ever uses a knife (custom or otherwise) for anything other than either preparing or eating their food.

Really a shame in my opinion, but probably true. It's most likely only going to get worst too as If some have their way, we will not even be able to carry even as much as a pocket knife in the years to come.

I think it would be fun to sit down for a few cold ones with Snody and Brownshoe:)
Keepin it real!

Kevin, that is so true. It's really hard to find "wild" places anymore where you don't get that "look" when packing a big camp knife. I always give my blades a workout whenever I get a chance to get out there.
Scott

This is what is in my pocket. All day, every day! I use it all the time around the shop, house and office. The knife is a bit more scuffed up now, but still going strong. It gets asked for often because people know I carry a knife. I have been asked for it by people that would never carry a knife and in some places that might raise some eyebrows in some circles, but they all expect me to have one and I do. I would love to be able to hand someone a folder that I made, but I haven't made any folders yet, even though Charlie has made a few. That will change soon with a little luck. The first one I make will replace this one in my pocket.

For a sheath knife I use this one most often. It stays on the seat of my truck and is used as a utility knife as well as a fishing and hunting knife. It is similar in shape and size to an Imperial 5" blade bowie I had as a boy in the 50's. I liked the style then and I like it even better now.

While I try to use only the sheath knives I make, I have collected knives since I was in high school and have some favorites that I still use on occasion. I'm just real careful to not be seen using them by anyone that would know the difference. :D

My shop and yard beater ( when it was new ) Simple 1095 & Ironwood

my daily carry . basic D2 and tan g10

and when I am not carrying the above small fixed blade ( which isn't too often ) , I favor this one , and as you can see , it has been used , rode hard and put away scratched.
drywall , tar paper , shingles , server crate banding... its been thru a lot.

I am digging that D2 / tan G10 EDC John - very nice.

Roger

Thanks , that smaller one of yours speaks to me loudly

What does drive me crazy is trying to keep my EDC looking nice enough to show others without babying it. I find I am touching it up more often that I would like.

On any of my other carry knives ( not made by me ) things like scars , scuffs , scratches and mars don't bother me a bit , but somehow I feel obligate to keep the one I made in the best appearing condition I can , but I don't worry about what I am cutting when something needs cut with it either.

I like your beater. Is it one of your creations?

I like how the ironwood is notched to match the tang.
Very nice subtle touch imo.

Kevin:

Indeed it is one of mine , that beater I started back when I first started making knives , never put a handle on it , just used it around the shop/yard. One day last year , just for kicks I soaked it in vinegar...liked the way it looked so I put a handle on it.

I carry a fixed EDC of my own making most of the time. But-

1: I carry my own made EDCs to test and beat on, and often sell them to regular customers. it's fun, and forces me to carry a new one. So I'm occasionally without one.

2: I do private maker-maker trades and will most often carry another maker's knife when i do for a few weeks so I can give good feedback.

I would love to be able to afford to carry a custom folder, and am not planning to make any- but, since I can't, I always have a victorinox or opinel handy.
