What do you actually do with your knife?

Just curious about what people actually use their knives for. I've fixed an office chair with the S2 juice, and opened plenty of boxes with other sharps, but what else goes on out there?

Different knives for different chores. It's not just a matter of one knife.

EDC (Benchmade 705) for cutting tape, rope, wood and any other small tasks.

Larger blade (Benchmade 710) goes out with me if I think I might need something more substantial.

Cold Steel Master Hunter for dressing large game or for camping.

Schrade Wolverine or Spyderco Moran for smaller game.

Leatherman Wave goes with me turkey hunting for pruning trees and cleaning birds. Also sometimes goes fishing for hook removal.

If I know I'll be wading (fly fishing or surfcasting), then I like my Camillus neck knife.

Rapala fillet knife and Spyderco Fisherman for cleaning fish.

I have several Spydercos and CRKTs as well, but the two Benchmades have been filling my pockets recently for EDC. I may be selling off some of the extra blades soon.

Honestly, I don't have much use for my knives, although I wish I did.

I'm always thinking about what I could do with my knives, but I just never get around to actually partaking of any activities that would make real use of my knives.

I do open boxes, cut up cardboard, slice some fruit, etc...but really, the only use I have for my knives are contrived, by me, so that I have at least some justification for the $$'s I have spent...

Well, what I actually meant to say is that I don't have much real need for my knives...I do use them quite often, cutting up just about anything I come across, which is not the same as actual real need for a knife.

At any rate, I enjoy my knives very much, which is what really counts, to me.

I use my high-speed, low-drag tactical one-handed openers to tactically "slit film over entree and beans, remove film over rice". I've found that a serrated Spyderco not only makes short work of twine, rope, tape, and plastic strapping, but also works on pizza and birthday cake. The CRKT Neck PECK makes a hella letter opener...

Tamara--LOL. Brilliant.

Come to think of it, the serrated sharps get called out every time I buy something with those 'electronically welded' seams. Can't get through those with scissors or a kitchen knife.

Sorry to report, not much.

My Opinel has been riding in my jean jacket pocket for some months and has not seen the light of day.

My clip point opened an envelope two or three days ago.

We had enough chopped vegetables so my new hocho sat in the rack.

I made a label this morning with the LCC. We were out of stick on labeles this morning, so I typed the guy's address on a word-processing problem and blew up the font. After printing, I used the tip of the LCC to carefully cut out the adress like an Xacto knife. Good thing I cut it on newspaper because it cut down about ten sheets.

Now that you mention it, I'm depressed.

I was taking the cover off my pool and had to cut some rope ASAP. I finally got the chance to use my ATROX that has been sitting in my pocket [Thanks Larry and Vince] for about two weeks. It cut slicker than sh**. Then it happened, I had a typical "Ira emergency" and really had to cut what I thought was just plastic coated nylon. NOPE, was six strand cable and if I did not cut it, I was gonna dump 46 tons of pine needles into my pool.

Needless to say, I gotta a lot of work repairing the edge on my Reif-Pirela ATROX, but the sucker cut through the cable and saved me days of vacumning pine needles out of a pool.

Today I got a gorgeous Gregg Lightfoot folder and shoved it in my pocket. Just took it out without looking and not realing how smooth that sucker opens [Sharp too],cut the crap outta my hand.

Other than that, I use my EDC's every day, but generally for nothing dramatic. I have no clue why I carry two or three knives other than being seriously addicted to knives and would die instantly if I was found without a knife at the ready:eek:

So I start this thread, and two hours later, I'm using the pliers on the S2 to pull accordioned paper out of the office copier. Sad ending: I could pull out bits, but not get the whole thing. We have to call Office Services to fix it, after all.

Also, whittling hot dog roasting sticks. (Not in the office.)

My knives and multitool are used mainly to send my wife into a caniption fit. She can not understand why I need so many different knives. I have tried to explain to her that my knives, multitools and firearms are my way spending myself out of a mistress. She keeps telling me that a mistress would be cheaper... smile.

Mainly, I use them for cleaning my fingernails, opening the mail, cutting string for kites, opening boxes, cutting the plastic ties on toys and finally for just plain playing.

I love to fiddle with them, cut, file, snip, slash, poke, saw, tighten, loosen, and anything else that I can think of.

I also use them as an excuse to buy sharpners, oil, rags, and a big old safe.

Thats about it.

God bless you all,

Forever in Liberty and Justice,

Judge Blackhawk

:o lately I hven't used my knives for anything to much. Mostly opening letters, boxes, cutting electricians and duct tape. I look at my Emerson and think it might be a little like overkill to use a big gnarly lookin tactical to open a letter.

Occasionally they see use cutting parachute cord or thicker line. I found having a knife in the yard usefull too, it seems there is always going to be something a knife would be handy for.

If I happen to not have a knife on me without fail either I will need one or someone will ask to use mine.

I use my folders everday.
They keep that extra annoying peice of metal on one side attached to my pants pocket

Famous Bill Mauldin WWII cartoon:

One army cook, holding Garand and bayonet, looks at other cook and says "I'll be damned. Did you know this can opener fits on the end of a rifle?" :D

Man, y'all aren't having any fun:p
This week, I've opened the mail (woohoo), opened and broke down a couple of boxes, opened a bubble pack, a DVD, peeled an apple with my SAK, and cut apart a 223 battery to go in my 2x123 flashlight.
Made some fuzz sticks, cut a couple of hundred feet of cardboard, and banged on a coathanger, just to see how my new S30V knives held up. Cut some branches off a tree that were getting in the way when I cut the grass.
Yesterday afternoon, I cleared a few briars with a BK&T Patrol Machete, and did about 5 lbs. worth of chopping with a Busse Basic 9. "5lbs" is about how much weight I lost working in long sleeves and gloves for several hours in 100% humidity, and the low 90s taking down small trees, trimming a bunch of others, and clearing brush and vines off a fenceline. The things we do for family members...and money:)
Got to try out my Wildlife Hatchet on a bunch of mimosa trees, while there, too. Not a knife, but it's close enough.
Been pretty busy on the knife front this week.
Some days I take a piece of paper out of a notebook, just to have something to cut, though. It's a sickness:(

Everything from cutting sheetrock to removing splinters.

A better question would be, what don't I use my knife for?

Picking my nose.:D

Killing people. :) (But only to save my own ass.)

Oh, sure, twine/rope/cord, plastic strapping, plastic wrappers, occasional bits of cloth or leather, paper, card-board, gets cut, plastic or wood whittled intot he right shaped doo-dad for what I need, splinters removed, blood is drawn [yes purposefully, from me. No you cant ask], and things like that happen too... but I still say I am first and foremost a defensive carrier of knives, so, without being a psycho, or a serial killer, or even a smart ass, my honest answer is that I carry knives to get myself out of life or death situations, which could very well mean, killing offending persons.

Have a nice day. :)

Just since I got home from the Blade Show:
I used my Kershaw Avalanche to cut sheetrock to take down a wall.
My new small Sebenza with S30V to cut plastic sheeting; then, wallpaper samples at the store. I used it again to cut paper table coverings last night. My new Simonich design Midtech Combat Raven with S30V to chop down a small bush. The saw on my leatherman Wave to even out a hole I had cut in a floor and I used the Sebenza again to slice up a jalapeno at lunch. I may have used them for more, but I don't keep track.

...my honest answer is that I carry knives to get myself out of life or death situations, which could very well mean, killing offending persons.

I'd like to say that, but to be perfectly honest, that's what this is for:

Maybe if someone were to grab my gun and I couldn't get to my backup, I might use my knife to convince him to let go; anyone worth stabbing is generally worth shooting, and these days it's a rare place you can legally tote a knife that you can't legally tote a gun (at least in my state).

Primarily for all those little uses at home and around the farm but also for reasons similar to Tamara's. And I suppose a tertiary reason is that I've carried a knife all my life. It's second nature.
