What do you actually do with your knife?

Uh, well, unfortunately, not very much. I live in a city and do not have any need whatsoever for a knife on a daily basis. Mainly, I dream about the things I COULD use it for! :D :( I guess I'm a collector, though I do carry.

Defense is also another reason.

Pretty boring post, eh? :(

I use my high-speed, low-drag tactical one-handed openers to tactically "slit film over entree and beans, remove film over rice". I've found that a serrated Spyderco not only makes short work of twine, rope, tape, and plastic strapping, but also works on pizza and birthday cake. The CRKT Neck PECK makes a hella letter opener...

The one and only Tamara from TFL? Holy Cow! You're everywhere! (OR you might say all the best places.):D

EDC gets used everyday, at work 100-300 times cutting plastic banding, plastic sheets, carboard boxes, etc. At home cutting open envelopes and packages, ocassional food prep, cling film, articles out of newspapers, and of course every folder I buy gets taken into work for "harder" testing on crates, pallets, and showing off to workmates ;)

Sanguinarians? Use a Wilkinson Sword "classic" razor blades. Not as aesthetically pleasing but you can put the little plastic boxes anywhere and no one will ever notice. Plus no need to keep them sharp.

"A gentleman always has a pocketknife and a handkerchief."

And from the hills of my native Appalachia: "Never trust a man who doesn't either wear a hat or carry a knife."

Let's see now .......

For 99.5% (give or take a fraction of a %) of my knives ... I get to dust, wipe, oil, store, and brag about...

For .5% (give or take a fraction of a %) of my knives ... get carried on my front, right pocket to ... to ... to ... I don't know ... look nice? :o What the heck does one use a knife for? (Crap, I forgot ... that doesn't count the other knives in my briefcase, on my keychain, in my car, etc...)

I use mine to save my dog!!! A couple of weeks ago I cut him out of a seatbelt he was tryin' his hardest to break his right rear leg in.
My knife gets used for a dozen "little things" every day, but every now and then it gets used for something important. Those few important times are the reason I carry all the time. Know what I mean?

I think the main use for knives is to make us feel like real men or women since we are carring a weapon/tool.

Other than that my knives maily server an everyday use. Usually as letter openers and opening various food packages for my mother.

Some times I use it so rarely that the only reason I remember its in my pocket is when it smashes into my skin when i collide with various objects.

There are a lot more sort of "down views" than I would have expected over hear that is for sure! Sometimes my knives aren't used very much for a while, esp. when I'm working semi-casual in a hi-rise office during the week. Then again, it is the occasional sudden opportunity that makes it all worth while. Two weeks ago my boss returned from vacation and brought some presents for the crew. A few were well wrapped in cardboard boxes. The team project manager looks at me - he doesn't even have to say anything, and out comes and opens my baby Seb. to slice those boxes neat as you please.... Even in the office when I don't use my knife for days at a time I find the scissors of my micra or SAK often come in handy...

At home, it is a different story. Fruit, dried and fresh, lots of cardboard - seems there is always stuff being delivered by UPS, I have 4 teenage daughters in case any of you didn't know... Tape, string, bags of animal food - besides the usual dog and cats, I have a few goats, sheep, pigs, fowl, etc. I build a fire or two out doors, even cook on it, almost every weekend, use knife to help make kindling (I use a hatchet and small sledgehammer on the bigger stuff). I prune my small trees, and cut the grass around them so I don't have to get too close with power tools.

My lawn, by the way, resembles much more a praire than a golf course. I have to mow it once in a while or the fire department gets antsy (and I don't blame them), but in the winter (rainy season), parts of my property can grow grass over a meter high, and in the early spring I do a lot of cutting with one of my hi-tech machetes. Speaking of machetes, in the fall its time to prune back blackberry bushes, and a friend of mine and I sometimes go along local stream courses while dry before the rains come and clear them of some of the bigger brush. We both get to play with my machetes then...

I have small knives and big knives, and I do use both types and sizes in between, though many (the bigger ones typically) only at certain times of the year. Of course I have too many knives anyway and while quite a few get used now and then, all too many hardly ever see use at all any longer...

Cutting rope, opening food containers, building shelters (ie making pegs and/or cutting branches etc to make roofing and bedding), opening boxes, cooking/eating, picking at things I'd rather not touch with my dainty pink hands, any various and sundry boring tasks that might require cutting something.

The funny thing is that on a day to day basis, I really don't think about it. It just happens to be a tool I carry in my pocket or on my belt that gets used when I need it.

I use knives for everything from cutting string and opening letters and boxes too clearing brush and cutting down trees. Never have had to use one for defence of self or family, but I sure do feel better having one with me.

not much:)

strip wire during labs when the TA forgets to replace them(which means every time I have a lab. heh.)

open mail(and other knives:))

break-down cardboard boxes so they fit in the trashcan easier

nothing to warrant the 5 knives I own so far. I couldn't live without one though if simply because it would take me 3 hours to do a 1 hour lab.

Although I don't use my knives as much as I'd like to (would be nice to justify the expense)...they've been seeing a lot of use this past week and will see a lot more before the month is over. We just got ten new computers with ten 17" monitors in for faculty and each of the computers was double-boxed so that's thirty boxes I get to cut open. If this thread came up a week earlier you would've seen my office filled to the brim with cardboard. As it is, I still have a ways to go. The best part is after I empty the boxes I can use them for targets--just hope the boss doesn't walk in while I'm slashing them up.

I also have to open a lot of toner cartridges and ink cartridges, boxes and boxes of paper as well as strip network cable and other miscellaneous stuff. Man I love using my knife...

I just ate [a tuff steak] tonight. I used a laguiole pocket knife. sometimes I use a Japanese laminated steel pearing knife with a beautiful hammon. I havn't actually used a real steak knife in about 5 years.:D

My jason jacks custom folder:
Opening letters and cardboard boxes, opening precooked food packagings, eating pizza on friday at office, light tasks in camping, Anything I need a knife for in everyday non-adventurous life :)

Fox skinner: heavy chores while camping.

as a reason to log on to bf. and as therapy :D .

ok, and to cut string, open envelopes, cut sandwiches and open food packages. but didn't some forum member once say that it's better to have a knife and not need it, to need a knife and not have it.....I really believe that.

Just curious about what people actually use their knives for.

Kathy - this question comes up a lot, but it's still fun to respond. Mostly because my usages change with each knife I decide to carry for my EDC.

Right now, it's a Swiss Champion XLT. 50 functions. I've currently used about 15 of them. I'm on a quest to get to all 50, though. ;)

:p

As soon as I turn 21, that'll be absolutely true with me as well, 'cept I'll prolly carry an auto (1911 of some type/size most likely.)
