What do you call this pattern??

Most dogleg jacks are 3 1/2 inches long and are obviously deeper in the body - they're a chunky pattern. I had a dogleg jack that was 3 3/4 inches once, but that was unusual (CRS is preventing me from remembering who made it).

No, a dogleg jack does not have it's blades at the large end -- you do that and it becomes a wharncliffe die knife of some sort.

Nice bone and really nice jigging. The sabre ground blades and the swedges are cool too. As much as the Schrade and the Shapleigh are similar, did Schrade make that DE?

What you say sounds right ZG!
And I'm sure all three knives came from the same place, thawk. Schrade made a lot of D-Es. I'll post the few I have, bye and bye.

Thawk, here's a nice Shapleigh D-E 3 3/4" Jack, that reeks of Schrade DNA. I wish I had the equivalent Schrade to compare it to.

Sweet peachseed jigging. I love how this type of bone looks after a little pocket wear to polish it up a bit.

Thanks Charlie.

Those are jaw-dropping to me. I especially like the master blade swedges on those, but they are all good all over.

True enough. I've a Diamond Edge made some years ago by Imperial in Ireland which was owned by Schrade. David

They look like the fit in the pocket just right. You have to love the peachseed jigging on the Schrades. It's unmistakably beautiful.True Craftsmanship.
I've often wondered if it was done by just one guy in the company back then. For instance, they had a guy make some jigging and he came up with the peachseed pattern and they said to him..."your on it".
How is it done today? By hand or machine?Almost looks like a little disk grinder they use.

Ive heard them called trapper jacks in the N.E. for 20+ years that Ive been collecting trappers up here-KV

I have also heard them referred to as "Pen Trappers" but I dont like that name in particular. "Slim Dogleg" might be a better name.

It is one of my favorite patterns. I have them in Schrade Cut, Schrade Walden, Primble (by Schrade), Maher & Grosh, Miller Brothers, Challenge, EK Tryon.

Schrade's peach seed jigging IS unique - no other company used it so it is an excellent way to verify by "DNA" that Schrade made a knife on contract.

The "peahseed" jig seems to have shown up late in the Schrade Cut era and lasted until the late 50's when a dark red bone with worm groove jigging seems to have taken its place.

The older Schrade Cuts did not have the peachseed jig, they had more of a conventional jigged bone that strongly resembles old New York Knife Co. bone.

Thats what makes me think it was just one guys talent.
I'll definately be in search of mode after the hollidays. Any good antique knifesites you guys can link me to to get one of these?Whats the collector value in that condition? Is Ebay my best bet?

I thought Barehead Trapper?

The first one in the picture is worth spending 5 years in the wilderness for! Those scales and very nice swedges there as well?

They are tough to find. I may be weeding out one or two of mine soon. But in general it is a tough pattern to find.

In the Cattaraugus Cut. Co. ID book there is pictured a knife they called the Slim Trapper (pattern # 21709) which had a clip and spear point blade. You can see it here as a background for this swing guard version by Reese Bose, which ain't no slouch if ya knowhutImean. :D

Reese does such a nice job! So much perfect detail, on such a slim blade!! I wonder if Tony will adopt me??
