What do you classify as a survival knife and what steel should this be made of.

The way I see it there is 2 classes of survival knives.

One is the 6-8 inch thick bladed heavy knife that can chop quite well.

And the other class is a fixed 3-4 inch knife that can be used for everything except chopping.

Lets say the hale bop missile-comet decide to take us out and strike the earth, you have 60 seconds to leave home and you can only take one knife with you, what knife would you take, and why. The knife you want may not exist but describe what you want to take with you and how you would use it.

For me its the one knife I have on my person, when the shtf.
Simple as that.

Maybe that explains, why I dont leave home with just one knife...or run out the door in your example.

Ok since noone want to take only one knife and we all live in different types of areas, the time would be tomorrow and the place you would go to is outside of your house and to somewhere that you would deem safe, and you´re in a hurry. lets say if you live in a city you try to go as far as possible away from this area and you have to survive with your only knife.

My vote would be swiss army knife. It can open cans, slice food, cut bandages, and can be used very effectively for self defence†.

† Use saw on SAK to cut club from tree/building/furniture/whatever. Hit other person with club.

This might be considered cheating, but not really. I have a multitool and a stout 3.5" folder whenever I have my trousers on. Even if you give me no chance to take anything from home I'd still be decently equipped. If I have to take one piece of tool in addition to what I have, it's going to be an axe. In the woods it's useful for, well, wood chopping. In the city it's useful to break doors and even walls to gain entry into abandoned buildings to shelter and forage for supplies.

Large knife for chopping etc. My H.I. M-43 kukkri, I back that up with a 4-5 inch fixed blade for finer tasks.

As it's already been said, the knife with you is the best survival knife of all. Having the biggest, baddest, and thickest survival knife is useless when you don't have it when you need it. I consider a nice strong folder one of the best survival knives. In a survival situation, you would actually have it!!!

I favor a 4" blade. But I might consider a 5", or even 6" blade if I lived in a heavily wooded area -- for the chopping advantage. The problem with long blades is that it's easier to over leverage them into breakage. They also make it difficult to perform precise tasks. And you'll have plenty of those if you only have one knife.

As far as the knife: Tough steel, thick blade, full tang, indestructible handle, easy to sharpen. My current choice is a 9" knife with 1/4" X 4" A2 drop point blade and micarta scales.

Exactly.

When the shtf, I doubt anyone is really going to take the time to grab multiple knives. Personally I'm going to grab whatever is nearest to me and get out. Surviving isn't about luxury and multiple knives.

Since you mention having only one knife, I would take a folder with me. It would need to be stout and about 4 inches. I live in the city and getting to the country would take up 1 hour on a good day. If the S were to HTF, there would be zero chance to get out there by car as the highways would probably be closed down or clogged up. The folder lets me carry a blade concealed and stay low-profile.

If I did decide to go out there, I would definitely take a 9 inch fixed blade for chopping and wilderness survival.

is it a fair assumption that you need something that fits your evironment. there is no place i know of that has urban, forest, jungle closeby earth?..but i do live very close to jungle. i would grab a decent fixed and a huge machete, notice how im partial to machetes. i like machetes. i need machetes must get more machetes.. i like big machetes especially martindale machetes. oh my did i mention tramontina machetes.:D

im fried again:jerkit:
