What do you classify as a survival knife?

Heh, asked a buddy of mine what he carried as a multi tool (keep in mind, this is a guy who's on a first name, good friend basis with guys like Keating). He said "The Kel Tec in my back pocket." I said "No, seriously, what multi tool do you carry?" He grinned and said "Kel Tec, because with it, I can get any other tool I want!"

Weird guy....but I hope he's next to me in the scenario described in the OP! LOL

Since I am already wearing a SAK & a Multitool I would go with grabbing a machete as I head out the door. I'll go with a chopping machete like a Condor Bolo machete if I'm head to somewhere with bigger trees to chop. I'll go with a lighter faster machete if I'm heading to more jungle-type terrain like a Condor El Salvador type one.

If I had time I'd probably grab half a dozen knives to cover all tasks with the best tool possible, but only one knife means I want a good Condor machete!

I would say large knife machete would be best, if you have ever noticed what the indigenous people living for generation after generation of the land they are normally using simple machetes.

And interestingly enough, generation after generation, they seldom advance far beyond a "stone age" type of existance.
And everyday is a struggle for them to survive.

But unlike some primitive wilderness areas, lots of this nation is very much urban and suburban civilization.
Even the rural and more remote areas in the lower 48 states are seldom far from "civilization".

Exactly...I'm not on the Zambizi River here...if that "day when everything goes wrong" occurs (you know, zombie piloted black helicopters and what not), I'm driving about an hour south of Memphis to Sardis Lake in Mississippi. Why? Well, it's run by Army Corps of Engineers, is a hydroelectric power station, so electricity will be up, it has a large amount of fresh water and a ton of fish as a food source. Hell, even has air conditioned and heated bathrooms with showers.

My need for a machete there? Not so great. My need for a basic camp/defense knife? Probably much higher.

What do you classify as a survival knife and what steel should this be made of.

The way I see it there is 2 classes of survival knives.

One is the 6-8 inch thick bladed heavy knife that can chop quite well.

And the other class is a fixed 3-4 inch knife that can be used for everything except chopping.

Lets say the hale bop missile-comet decide to take us out and strike the earth, you have 60 seconds to leave home and you can only take one knife with you, what knife would you take, and why. The knife you want may not exist but describe what you want to take with you and how you would use it.

I've got an old Endura3 for my EDC, and I've got a D2 RAT-7 and a 19" Estwing axe in the trunk of my car. However for the various end of civilization scenarios, I've got a Busse NMSFNO.

I would classify any 3.5 inch - and larger fixed blade, full tang, sport/hunting style knife as a suitable survival knife. Machete is what most native people use around the world.

well, if i had no time to grab anything and had to run into the woods with what i have on me at the time, it'd almost certainly be my Benchmade Nimravus because that knife rarely is anywhere other than my belt. if i DID have time to grab my choice, it'd be my Recon Tanto simply because my new knife (intented for camping, etc) hasn't had time to prove itself.

i plan on replacing the Nim, as my daily carry, just for this reason. if i had to run what i brung i'd be wishing i had brung a little more knife :(

Your friend is planning to steal and murder.

You do not want to be anywhere near a person like that.

On the day when society breaks down...he won't be in the minority, he'll just be better at it.

I really hope in reading your post again, that you were being tongue in cheek.
