What do you cut your steak with?

Assume it has a lot of seasoning. Does this throw folders out of the question, or are you just feeling risky?

My #1 would be my KOA Bush Camp

Folders are fine if the blade is long enough to keep "gunk" out of the pivot, or if the whole thing can be washed.
The Spyderco Police with stainless steel handles is really both; the blade is long enough to usually keep the pivot clean, but you can just wash the whole thing in hot soapy water if you get it gunked-up.

(But soon there will be a host of "experts" along to say I'm "playing" with my knives...)

A steak knife!
If I'm eating out and the restaurant knives are dull, I use my folder. Just rinse off the blade and I'm good to go!

The other thing to consider is how much you learn about your knives by cutting different materails.
Pretty much any new knife I get ends up being used to cut steak, potatoes, carrots and onions, cardboard and wood (Not all at the same time though!).

Plenty of times I've had people ask me how I think a particular knife of theirs would do cutting various materials...to which I always reply "How about you go cut those things and find out?" :)

Viva la knife! (languages aren't my bag, baby)

A steak knife. Anything else just seems like crocodile dundee shaving with his bowie knife.

We use proper steak knives that are in our cutlery drawer...some are inexpensive, and some are hand me down's that are over a hundred years old, and worth some good money, seeing as they're part of a silverware set. Insofar as using my folders or fixies, I don't think so.

No offense, but you guys shouldn't be afraid of putting your knives to use. Out in the woods I've used 10 inch blades to replace not only knives, but forks and spoons, too. I hope saying this doesn't void all of my warranties at once, but I use my knives for fire pokers, batoning oak (oh yeah, the dry stuff), safety plastic openers, etc etc. Not all knives are meant to end up on a display shelf (although many of them are deserving of that)

Oh, and theres really nothing more boring than a steak knife. You have an account on "bladeforums" and use regular people utensils? C'mon.

One of these days I'll get a really nice set of steak and other kitchen knives.
I'll still use the others though.

You haven't lived till you cut the Christmas turkey with a sword. :D

The isopropyl alcohol was for sword sterilization, not drinking. :D
