What do you do in the winter???

Going out for back country skiing and climbing ice.
Or smoking meat or take winter birds photographs at home.

Drink coffee, read, and surf the net. I don't practice being miserable as I've learned life will give me plenty of opportunities to be so anyway.

Skis are a great way to get around, one has to watch the temperatures to match the right wax for the conditions. Over the years i have a couple dozen different waxes on hand. Good waxing makes all the difference. Great to get out in the fresh air. In summer when the biting flies are bad I catch up on house work, clean up from winter, and spend time on the internet. Not to mention the 8 cords of wood it takes to heat the place.

Ha Ha, Thats a cool Dawg.

He's smart and knows how to keep the tender parts out of the snow. :D My hobbies and interests are fairly wide. I have gone through and sometimes revisit interests such as motorcycles, fishing, hunting, metal detecting, cutting tools, camping, improving my post secondary education etc. At this point in time I just got a Hultafors axe in and I'm taking it out for some play. It isn't easy to find play time while working, taking classes, writing essays, yada, yada. At different times I've killed Whitetail, Mulies, geese, ducks, grouse, you name it. I got rid of my guns years ago but I might come back to it, who knows. It is fun to stand still and find the outline of a bunny in the crisp morning winter air, then do your best to pop him with a head shot through the brush tangle. The trick is to stand still as you go. I have seen a few rabbits quietly try to hop away as I look back.

Make sure our friends are comfortable and warm....

You bet!

Winter here is a busy time. Depending upon weather, clearing the long laneway and yard of snow so that the vehicle gets in and out. Snowblower and gas can are handy under tarp right off the porch. Only once this winter, when the temp reached -33.7C (-28F), did I have to warm it up with my propane tent heater under the tarp to start it. Very reliable. Snow this year not as deep as last, but the cold is relentless.

Snowshoeing ... always fun if the wind chill is not too painful. I must make my way to the incinerator at the back of the property at least twice a week on shoes anyway ... but I enjoy winter campfires out there a lot as well.

I know I left the canoe here somewhere last fall ...

Winter trim - the dogs get buzzed. Lots of fur for the birds to line their nests in spring. Usually I like to get this job done in November to give their coats a chance to grow in before Jan/Feb. Just such a demanding winter.

That time is here to break out the grow lights! Revive the over-wintered roots. Check mailbox for packages from the seed house.

Sorting the camp 'wall' and checking off the items packed in the canoe barrel. Prepping for spring. I just enjoy all the seasons so much! But winter offers me that rare luxury of time without the demands of the property.

Cool. My wife is into snow shoeing. I could never get into it myself. The warden also uses a bow/arrows to hit boxes out in a field. I might go for that one of these days. My father killed a moose with a bow in the 60's, so the idea of a bow for deer has some modest appeal for me.

I think that snow shoeing is the easiest way to move around in winter. As long as you know how to walk, you will be fine with snowshoeing. No need to have alpine skiing background or anything. Pack smaller, are usually ligther and you can wear them with mostly any kind of winter boot (as long as you go with a strap binding).

Sometimes when we go ice climbing, a couple of my friends use backcountry skiis instead of snowshoes. They only get an advantage when the ground allows for downhill skiing on the way back to the car. Otherwise, we usually arrive at the same time. And they have to pack climbing boots because their skiing boots are not suitable for climbing. I don't.

Try it!

Well in winter here sometimes I put a jacket on. other times I don't. Mostly it just means it's nice and cool to get out and do fun stuff.

Another thing I do in winter - looking for snowshoe hares. Which usually means not finding any, and then shooting stumps on the hike out...:D
