I feel that "new" should ONLY be used if the item has been used, carried, worn, etc, The knife must have only been removed for pictures, possibly been opened a time or two for the person to discover that the knife is not for them. Any modification, be that sharpening, changing the clip, or cutting anything that leaves the slightest amount of wear (i.e. if you can see it under magnification).
My view of this is a bit Draconian, but all it takes is one misunderstanding to ruin your reputation. There is a fine line between omitting truth and lying. It is better to avoid said line when possible.
