What do you guys do with your fighting knives?

This may be a dumb question, but I've wanted to ask for a LONG time! I am talking about the large, fixed blade knives that are designed specifically as fighting weapons (Not ones that would double as a large camping knife or other utility chores). It seems to me that if the designed purpose of them is for fighting, they would not see much use. Not meant in the least as a knock, I just want to know from those who actually use or carry them.

So basically, you're asking what we do with our thin double edged daggers, cause basically everything else can double as a utility knife...

Well, when I have to venture out into the mean NYC streets at night, I take an Ek pigsticker, or #3 with me...

We normally meet at people's homes and put two fighting knives in an enclosed area and we watch them fight and usually bets are made.:D Seriously, I only have a few knives that are mainly for fighting, and those are usually just to have and others I practice with.

Okay, a steak knife can double as a utility knife too, right? But that isn't what it's designed for. I'm talking daggers, fighting Bowie's with sharpened clips, blade catching guards, etc.

I would imagine anyone who carries a knife designed solely for fighting carries it in case it needs to be used for it's intended purpose.

mine is a 12 ga rem 870 loaded with #7 birdshot, then alternating 00 buck and 1 oz slugs.

my other knives all get along.

If I was a mod (which I'm not) I'd think this belongs in practical tactical. Anyway, you need a knife that can slash and stab. The BM AFCK and the Spyderco Endura and Police are almost like extensions of your hands when it comes to slashing and stabbing.

I carry my Cold Steel Tanto (6 inch blade) just in-case I don't feel like shooting the goofball who might want to be dumb enough to attack me. I'd just stab him in his eye...I'm sure that'd take the desire to continue an attack on me away pretty quickly, without all that nasty noise that gunfire makes.

I only have one true fighter.
Almost all of the rest can be used for utility.
BUT for $200, I just couldn't pass up a Ron Gaston beauty.
The ignorant knife-user that I bought it from "polished" off the scrimshaw on the bolster  and tried to polish the blade, but it was scratched up from polishing when I got it.

I only ask because I see so many knives billed as fighters around the net and in the mags, and in TK especially, some of the writers carry some mighty big knives tucked away in their waistband! Here in CA, it's a misdemeanor to carry a handgun, but a felony to carry a sheath knife concealed. Don't know how it is elsewhere.

I used to carry my AlMar 5001 Fang dagger a lot when I was younger and went to questionable places more often. Probably ruined it's collector value..:(

One night after a few beers my buddy asked me why I owned a knife like my Lile Combat. 7 inches of wicked sharp D2 and black Micarta. I mentioned that it might make a good camp knife, then I stabbed my little office refridgerator a couple times for effect. He laughed like hell. The little fridge still works well as I used a couple fridge magnets like bandaids to seal the insulation wounds in the door..:) It took my wife over a year to move the magnets and find the "wounds". She knew immediately what had happened, but didn't know which knife was used. She laughed like hell as well.

I do not own such a knife at this time, but in the next year or so I will be purchasing a fighting Bowie from Jerry Fisk. Once I purchase this knife I plan on taking James Keating's Bowie fighting seminar and training so that I will learn how to properly use this knife. When I have learned to properly use my fighting Bowie I will carry it with the hope that I will never have to use it, but with the knowledge that if the need arises I will have the proper tool for the job.

I own a couple of Fighting Bowies, (Randalls). They used to fight off the humidity here is south Florida, but now there is a dehumidifier in my safe.;)

I just want to know from those who actually use or carry them.

A client gave me a 10 pound block of Ghiridelli(sp)chocolate a couple days ago, my Bagwell "Helles Belle" Bowie had it chopped up to bite size pieces in 30 seconds! No I did not lick the blade clean when I was done. :p

I don't own any fighters. But in the spirit of the question, I do own several hunters. I don't hunt though, and wouldn't know how to skin and dress an animal if a carcass were to fall at my feet. Sure these hunters can be used as utility knives too, but truthfully a SAK or a boxcutter is probably the extent of my day to day knife needs. My EDC folder is already overkill for me. I think it just comes down to the enjoyment of having these things.

I think this is a very good question.

I do not own any knives totally designated for knife fighting. At my age and knowing what I know now, learning where the exits are is more of a realistic education. Due to a knife's limited range and the exposure to blood borne pathogens, I'd throw a chair at the aggressor first.

However, there are many great fighting knives, and I think that the sport of collecting such implements is a valid persuit. For example, I collect PEZ dispensers, but I never eat the candy. Several of my handguns were designed for 'combat,' that is, single stackers for running barricades in IPSC.

I had read the history of some Randall designs. The story goes that a guy who really was in fights went to a cutler to have a design improved. Ernie designed the CQC6, which really went to Desert Storm. Bill Bagwell makes the best Bowies I've seen.

In any hobby or collection, I believe "collecting for the sake of collecting" is valid. You need not explain your intent to anyone.

What do you guys do with your fighting knives?

Which are those? Just about everything has been billed as a fighting knife. Just ask your Federal agent at the security gate if you have any doubts.

I don't carry weapons, I carry tools.
