What do you guys do for a living??? I just sold and got out of auto repair after 22 years. Been at it from the age of 19. Running an auto shop never gave me the time i wanted to spend in the outdoors. I got no idea what direction i should look at... So what better place to ask then from you guys.. Right now im taking maybe two months off. Next week im going camping to anza desert and do some GeoCaching. Next month im planing to go backpacking to the high sierra lone pine area. But i need to get back to work too..

I'm a prof. at a mid-sized university. A lot of my outdoors fun has to do with research. I have a bunch of lakes in Ontario that I study and also have some international projects in the middle east and now in the Caribbean. In truth much of my time is at a desk, writing proposals, reports and securing funding. I do get to live vicariously through my grad students though and sometimes they suffer me to come along for the ride. So as a Prof., I can recommend school - but fully aknowledge that isn't for everybody.

Your expertise as an auto guy can have some interesting spin-offs. One of my father's buddies runs a consulting buisness where we examines end-of-lease cars coming from customers and going back to the dealer. There is some fee schedule that I don't fully understand, but he does well and travels often doing this. I bet one could work in a lot of day hikes 'in-between' trips !!

Good luck on your vocational search. A bit of hiking and solitude might be a good source of inspiration. One word of advice, is to think more broadly about your skillsets rather than how you have 'used' your skillsets in the past. Many people box themselves into too narrow an area because they don't think about how the skills they have in one trade translate into multiple types of jobs.

I sell for a cell phone company. I was a general manager in the restaurant biz for years and got tired of the long hours. I am slated for management in this company, but I'm loving just selling right now. I am ALWAYS looking for something new to learn. My college degree is in Education...

I am a student right now, and I'm about to graduate in June, and am looking for a job. I'm studying Electronics Engineering Technology. Previously I worked in construction, and at a factory.
Good luck on the carrier change!

KGD,

Which school? My dad is a retired prof. from York. I own a couple of businesses , a consulting firm and a laboratory...

I'm at Windsor, with the Great Lakes Institute. I also head up the organic analytical lab there. What does your laboratory do?

i used my knee surgery in jan., as an excuse to quite my job...:D before that i had been an assistent preschool teacher, for the past 3 years or so...
i also work part time doing outdoor ed. work, and guiding some basic rock climbing and backpacking courses...

now i stay home with our 2 boys... my wife has always made more $$$ than me anyways.. it was getting rediculously expensive to pay for childcare for the both of them... :D it works for us... we get to spend a lot of time outside and in the woods...

Been in the U.S Army for 16 years plus, looking to retire in about 3 1/2 years and spend alot of time in the Outdoors.

I am a soon to be coporate downsized steel worker after 19 years. Am going to spend my severance package on new knifemaking tools, beer and new laptop.

What type of consulting? I was an account manager for a computer consulting company back in the Y2K days....Now that was some fun! We couldn't help making money, but my bosses were short-sighted and didn't think the web was going to be as big as it is and they lost everything.

I am thinking of getting into something else...I like to teach. Sales is teaching...

I'm a pharmacy student/intern. Sadly it leaves pretty much no time for fun or the outdoors. I've not got any classes/engagements this summer though except for work, so I ought to get some good dirt time in. I'm actually supposed to be studying for 5 finals right now, so I need to keep a little more brief...

As far as future jobs for the OP, previous suggestions are pretty good ones. Some part/full time appraising for insurance companies or dealerships might be in the running. Maybe part time at an auto parts store might give you some more time for the woods, too.

Hang in on those studies SpookyPIstolero - if its any consulation, Profs hate exam week as much as students do !!!!

MM,

That is really cool, it must really neat to spend the time with your kids...

(joking of course)

Rocky,

Sorry, I missed your post, the consulting side does Industrial hygiene work, safety engineering, environmental engineering, risk management, security, hazardous chemical/waste management, and bunch of other stuff...

Carpenter, I have basically been gifted or cursed with the ability to do just about anything with my hands..I have worked as a machinist, welder, and just about anything that has to do with building or making things. I am an Hobby artist and knifemaker..right now I work for a restoration and remodeling company that also builds new homes once in a great while. I told a kid helper that works part time for us to study hard in college, and become a lawyer or doctor....swinging a hammer for a living can feel a bit under-rewarding at times. Something about always working for millionaires, and never having enough for my family that can make you a bit jaded. But!...there are a lot of folks without work, and I am thankful overall...really.

I've worked with a few Env. Engineering firms including Golder's. My research is tending more towards fisheries these days though. Your firm must be doing very well in todays market - a good niche for sure.

Truck driver. I own a truck and haul cars throughout the country.

thats what i call a very diverse group of people. For right now i been offered one job to manage a large auto shop. But im not so crazy about it as its back to what i used to do. The lady that sold our place said she would be more then happy bring me into the real estate. But its not the time for it now.. Its getting slow with the way things are. Next week should clear my head i hope.. Im not afraid of work and people that know me including customers said they would call me as soon as they hear of anything. Im lucky by having good reputation with people i dealt with. I do like that idea of checking cars at the end of the lease..
