what do you guys do

I'm a professional genealogist (member: Assoc. of Professional Genealogists, www.apgen.org) My small home-run business is "Consulting Family Detective" which offers genealogy-related services.

Gene,

I gotta say that I used to find construction work a lot more rewarding in a lot of ways than business. It used to feel good at the end of the day to actually have a material accomplishment.... But like you say, I'm grateful that I have work every day.

KGD,

Yep, business is too good some days...

Well I have done just about everything. Being a Park Ranger and guiding was nice.

But now I'm a contractor for the USPS and about to go postal any minute now.

I cut trees for farmers mostly and work part time with another tree cutter who
has tree shears and my wife and I cut the trees that he can not get to ( hill sides,
draws, trees that are in Fence lines with our chainsaws.) I started making knives
about two months back (after learning how from knife maker David Sloan he helped
me get my shop up and running) and have been doing that part time and on days that
it is raining ( I am doing that full time then).

I work for a small outdoor retail company and part of my job is running their online business consisting of this and this. This is after ~8 years of working for multi-billion dollar corporations on the corporate side, so it is a nice change.

carpenter (framer)! hey jesus was a carpenter! love the trade! where else can a 41 year old kick butt on 18,21,30,35, 39,41,etc... year olds and get paid to do it to boot! although there is a slow down in the construction industry, the good ones always work!

I own a deck/roof restoration business and get to be outside most of the year. I am fortunate to work with my son and several additional great employees. My crew is excellent and we all share the good fortune of being able to work at some beautiful locations.

I'm a hooker.......

Just kiddin', for the past 10 years I've been working in injection molding, making widgets. As of June 17, I'm going to be unemployed and I have no idea where the future is going to lead me. I hope it's some sort of outdoor trade, I've spent the last ten years in the same room and I'm looking forward to a change.

I was a shop foreman for a trucking company, I had a shop, tank wash, and waste water treatment plant for almost 8 years. Now I'm an assistant manager for a food grade tank wash, and do waste water treatment for the tank wash.

I'm a tutor at a Technical College. Going there for an Associate's in Biotechnology. When I'm done there, I plan on getting a job that will pay to further my education at a university. What exactly do I want to do? Haven't exactly decided. Maybe a degree in Biology/Ecology, Anatomy, and many people have said that I should get one in Mathematics. I would like to teach in higher learning or work in the outdoors.

I have been a geologist for a long time. Currently working at a small consulting and remediation business doing whatever makes money. :) We do Industrial Hygene work too.

UPS for 12+ years now. Mmmmm physical labor. Good pay and bennies. They also have great benefits for part timers.
Enjoy your time away from your old job!!

I recently got promoted to doing surveying for construction (roads, water, sanitary sewer,...) and cook in a resturant in the evening. Before that i did road construction/repair and welding.

I've been a A&P/Heli-Logger for the last several years, working on Chinooks stateside logging and in south america on oil rig contracts. The company I work for bought ownership of the helicopter from Boeing recently, and now I've moved into a spot as a Quality Control/Airworthiness Inspector. Quite an adjustment, but I get to spend more time with my family.

I'm a consulting geophysicist working in minerals exploration, mostly gold these days, specialising in gravity surveying. I am currently based in Peru but still technically a resident of Canada. I am very fortunate as I truly love my job; I get to travel to spectacular places around the globe and even better, I get to do most of my work in the great outdoors!

I run my own law firm. We handle all sorts of cases, but I do mostly criminal defense (I used to be a prosecutor for years). I am swamped with 5 murder cases right now! There are several military bases nearby and I help a lot of service members with military issues since I used to be a JAG. We also do health care law, labor law, and some personal injury. Lately we have been helping new businesses get started. Running a firm is hard work and I don't have much free time any more, but we are setting it up so that we have associates doing the work and we run the place. No benefits yet (we are only in our second year), but we will get there sooner than later. We are also starting up a non-lawyer business that is in the development stage.

I think that taking time off before you go into something else is a great idea. When it comes time to pay the bills, go ahead and take anything you can find, but keep your options open and sooner or later you are going to find something that you enjoy doing. Going back to school is a good idea too.

Congratulations on the career change. It may get rough going for a while, but you'll figure out what you want to do. Good luck!
