So, I finally got sick of not having a knife that fit me perfectly, one that just did have all the attributes that I want in a knife.
I want a spine thickness that could take some beating, a roughly 4" blade, full tang, scandi ground and carbon steel.

So, I did up the first drawing and did a cut out of what I wanted.

Now here it is after the first bit of grinding, now this was made from an old file, and I had to go slow because I dont have the equipment to heat treat, nor did I want too:D

Now an in hand shot.

And now some comparison shots with the RC6.

So, I had originally wanted to make it a clip point, but as I was going, I thought it looked better with a drop point style. before I finished I had toyed with a tanto shape, and even a warncliff style, but this is what came out and I am very happy with it, I still need to put the scandi grind on, but its going to take some type as I dont have the right stuff, this all was done with a bench grinder and a desk mounted hand sander.

So, all in all Im kinda happy with how it came out, like I said it still needs the edge put on it, and I need to figure out what to put on it for handles, Im thinking a hikory or a general run of the mill hardwood.

So what do you think guys?

I think you have a great start. The only problem I see is you will NEVER stop at just one. Trust me, I know. ;)

Now that im looking at the picture the only thing I might do is make the finger coil more pronounced.

So far so good! I like the drop better than the clip.

Keep us up posted bro!

Just when I find something to pick on Marcelo about, you point out that it was my own stupidity and he was actually mocking me.:(

One of these days.......

This is a file. Are you going to heat treat it down? Would a file be brittle otherwise? I dont know. Just enquiring.

I dig it!

Well there ya go Fonly. Not only to you have your first self made knife, you got a name for it too. The Goog!!! :D

Looking good!

Ok. I see a natural progression here:
- knife buying
- joining bladeforums
- escalating interest in quality knife ownership
- interest elevated to knife stlye, shapes, and grinds never before aware of
- purchase of higher quality knives at ever-higher prices
- transgression to buying blade blanks and attempting scale-work
- improvement and refinement in scale-work
- the grinding of the first knife!!!!

Good on you Fonly. I'm almost there. I'm right behind you!

Gorgeous Operations Outdoors Gadget - GOOG!

Nice work Fonly - thats gotta take a lot of patience using that belt sander like that. Wish I had that kind of patience. Great work on the Goog.

"Think I'll go out to Alberta...
Weather's good there in the fall....
I've got some friends that I could go to working for....
Still I wish you'd change your mind...
If I asked you one more time...
But we've been through this a hundred times before..."

looks like a good start! i would suggest grinding the teeth off of the file with your sander or bench grinder, to reduce drag in cuts. also, if you leave the teeth with a scandi grind you will file every cut you make...

you can mostly grind out the bevels on the bench grinder, and then flatten them out and true them up with the belt sander you have there. just take it slow and dunk after every pass or two to keep things cool.

about brittleness; i don't find a fully hardened file too brittle for a small knife. while shaping the handle of one with a fine tip (file blade-fully hardened) i accidentally dropped it point first into a concrete floor with no affect except for a small bit of dulling.

I think that your first deserves better than run of the mill hardwood! Give me a shout and I'll send you out some nicer wood. How thick do you want the handle scales? You can use run of the mill hardwood for everybody else's knives, but your first is special. I have some birds eye maple (undyed or stabilized) cocobolo, lacewood, thin bocote planks that I'll slab out for you.

Keep on going, it is a dangerous slope that is quite fun.

P.S. Would you like some Kydex for it as well?

Ok guys, Ill call it the GOOG!

Thanks for the input guys, as to the file question, I think I might have too, or I could just not baton with it.
I have put the scandi grind on it now, it still needs some finishing touches, but overall its coming nice.

Mabye Ill have to find some maple burl, or walnut. I DO have to get some leather and make a sheath, or I might give Eric a call.:D
