What do you knife guys use your knives for?

:thumbup::thumbup:

Is that a Sebenza? :rolleyes::D

Nope, Benchmade 750 Pinnacle. It's a very Sebenza-like knife that BM produced in the mid 90's. I've been carrying and using this knife for 15 years or so (along with a bunch of others, of course) but since it has a coated blade it tends to show wear more than most of the others.

The rather weak answers to the original question supports my theory that most of us don't actually use our knives for much of anything on a regular basis. But that's okay in my opinion because the ' potential ' uses of a knife, justify always carrying one. Some of the more dramatic potential use of a knife, that comes to mind, include; cutting a jammed seatbelt after a car accident, cutting a collar off a choking dog who's hung himself up on something, slicing off someones long hair who's managed to entangle themselves in some sort of machinery, and of course a knife could save your life in a self-defense situation. These types of things are rare and may never happen, but they certainly could, and that's why I never leave my house without carrying a reasonably substantial knife.

That story about the person who was KILLED because her clothing got caught in an escalator from a couple of years ago came to mind. All those people looking on and not one functional knife between them. A $1.99 flea market special could probably have saved her.

The what? Are we reading the same thread? People responded with everything from opening letters to cleaning game.

If your thesis is that most of us are not professional whittlers well duh...but we do use our knives.

I suppose some of us could walk around all day loaded-out ready to de-animate any Tangoes in our paths, but most of us, including Soldiers in the field typically use their knives to open boxes, strip wire, cut string & rope or just to butter bread.

I love knives, I have for years. Worked in the culinary industry for a while. Been on many a camping trip. My work is far too hard on tools to take an expensive knife. Cheap and replacable razor knife, and my Boker Cop Tool is what I carry to job sites. The Boker is a nice little prybar and serrated knife, it's come in handy more times than I thought it would.
In my daily life, I carry a knife, but not for a specific job, just whatever I might need it for.

Well, today I used my BK9 to clear a fallen tree from a trail. Was out hunting deer (last day of the deer season here :( ) and saw this broken tree across the trail (my bow is there for scale)...

Chunked my BK9 in it for a hero shot - almost went all the way through with my bow still propped on it. Whoopsie...

And there she goes...

The trail is used by hunters, hikers, horse people and snow mobilers. Don't want any fast movers busting their heads on it.

What do you use your knife for?

Whose veins?
Not really, but that is what I saw when I glanced over it.

:p

It makes your knives look like this:

Oh, the humanity! :D

But this brings up a bigger psychological issue of the bystander effect. If they had a knife, would anyone have stepped in to help. Or even, did any of them have knives and do nothing, but that's a discussion for another place.

If you carry a knife you'll end up using it for something. I use mine for everything from Opening up mail, to shaving, to fighting off hordes of gremlins that were trying to steal my jumper cables.

I hate those gremlins.

My knives are used for everything that requires a sharp edge. The weirdest thing I've ever used a knife for is to clean a wound. OUCH. :(

"It's just that I'll use scissors, a box cutter or whatever is on hand for the tasks described above."

I don't know about you guys, but I consider a box cutter a knife. I would rather use a sharp knife over a dull pair of scissors for many of my cutting tasks.

LOL, I was being a smarta$$. I've never seen a picture of a Sebenza that actually looks like it's been used.. :D

In addition to all the task and uses previously mentioned I'll give this example.

Today I was out in town with the family and noticed how my six year old had to keep tugging at his paints to keep them up. What did I do about it? I slipped into the back room of Petco and cut a strip of plastic off of the pallet I found. Then used the plastic to cinch his belt loops together and then cut off the excess. A simple fix, easily done, because I keep a pocket knife on me.

That's awesome! I mean, why use a belt, when a pocket knife and a piece of plastic will suffice! :D

As a newbie to knives other than kitchen knives, what do you use your knives for?

My BIL uses one to gut the occasional deer he bags and another friend who is great with his hands pulls out his leatherman for all sorts of stuff. People I know in the military and paramilitary have them but admit they don't use them all that much.

As a suburbanite near a large city I can't think of many situations I needed a knife or saw one being used outside of a kitchen.

And please, no "If you have to ask then you simply don't get it" type responses.

I am an urban homeowner. My house is ~30 years old. As such, there are always fixits to be done around the house. So, aside from opening packages and such, I use my knife to:
-trim the flash off plastic parts. (the plastic that sticks out at the mold line.)
-trim plastic parts as I adapt them to do something they weren't designed for.
-cut garden hose (I patch hose, rather than buy new hose.)
-cut small branches
-flake off paint chips that are loosely adhering.
A few dozen other things.

Confidence. I like to walk out the door feeling that I am reasonably prepared to take care of myself with the tools I have on me, and I lose a good bit of that feeling if I have no knife on me. It's almost a part of my identity. I may not need to use a knife for anything on a given day, but I'll still have one on me. I carry one everywhere, along with a small LED flashlight and a Zippo lighter. And I've noticed that my friends, family, and co-workers have come to realize that, so when they need a knife and don't have one, they ask to borrow mine.

I'm a college student who lives on campus and even I can find a use for my knives most days. Normally I use them for cutting paper out of spiral bound notebooks, and/or lab notebooks because I suck at using the perforations without ripping the paper sheets and I find knives to be more controlable than sissors. I also use my knives to open letters, school supply packages, and snacks, as well as breaking down boxes and trimming loose threads from clothes.

Could I preform most of those tasks with other tools or even my hands or teeth? Yes I probably could, but would it be as easy as using a nice sharp knife? IMO no it would not. Plus there are also the unexpected emergency uses that were mentioned above, and I hope will never arise

Depends on where I am and what I am doing. But I am a firm believer in using the right tool for the job at hand. Even when I was still under Mom and Dads roof "very very young" If someone asked to borrow my knife I would first ask what are you going to cut/use it for.

But as one said the most I use my knife for is to cut things. Things that a knife is intended be used as. With that said there must be a million things a knife can be used properly for.

Food, wood, cloth. foam, string, tape, carve I love Jean in a tree, whittling, making usefull things as a shelter when in trouble with the weather unexpectadly, fuzzy sticks for fire, kindling for a fire, well I can't list all million here.

And as one said here. I do not and am not fully dressed till I have my knife clipped to my pocket. I was rasied in the era where you could have a kife in your pocket at school and a knife was just a tool. I so hate the word tactical now to the point of it making me sick. I cannot think of one time that I saw someone have to defend themselves with a knife nor did I ever have to defend my self with one. To all the tacticals this and that out there you may be the reason that our freedom to own one may slowly diminish. With skulls in photos with many knives. With these flipper knives that open faster than some autos. Don't go round bitchin when you can't have them anymore. That is why I like spydercos stance on assisted knives. They had vision enough to see this possibility.

I suppose the most I use my knife for right now is around the house stuff. Opening packages, cut string, you know tactical stuff like that and having a sharp knife to cut with since it seems to my family it is ok to cut pizza on the metal pan that they cooked it on arrrrgggggg.
