What do you knifelovers think about my custom tracker knife?

Sorry. Don't get upset. I know this knife is not for your father-in-law. What I'm saying is that because your knifemaker makes this style of knife well, it doesn't mean that the maker can make the hunter/skinner for your father in law well.

If I know a maker who makes a great machete, it doesn't mean that the same maker will be able to make a great slipjoint pocketknife. That's all I'm trying to say.

Ok. I see what you meen. Who would you suggest as a good skinner/hunter knife maker. Nothing fancy just a strong blade and a nice clean finish on the handle.

I think the only thing left to say in this thread is take her out and pound on her then come back and give us a good honest review.

Very good. We are making progress. Do you like how the "damascus-style" finish came out on that WSK style knife?

Or by "finish" are you talking about "fit and finish"...like how neat the edges of the steel are and how well the pieces of the knife fit together?

I'm talking about fit and finish and also how good the edge is.

This smacks of Frost Cutlery's "custom" Spanish-made knives, of which there are but a mere ten thousand cranked out per run. That or Bud K. Nothing wrong with either, as long as you know what you're paying for, and the fact that the knife in question is certainly not something a famous knife maker spent the last century working on, awaiting your birth then ascendant to majority.

Cheap knives can certainly be fun, as there is no love lost when they splinter into several thousand pieces after slicing a loaf of particularly stale raisin bread.

Enjoy.

Interesting, but essentially useless for its intended role.

That about sums it up. The knife is interesting for it's design, but if you intend on using it for camping/woods craft, I suggest that you set camp near a high cliff, because you will want to throw yourself off it.

If your wanting a really nice skinner take a look at theChris Reeve nyala. Really well made and comfy to use. That would be a great gift for a father in law.

take it easy

I would be happy with a knife from one of the knife manufacturers in your country (Norway?), like Helle or Brusletto! Do you know of any custom makers who make Sami style knives? I think several custom makers make them here in America.

We have some very good local knifemakers that make good, strong sami knives. He already has one that he loves and he also has a Helle he use alot. I would like to give him something more exotic and something we normally don't see up here.

So...I guess my new knife is, to thick, has a useless tanto tip, useless sawback and is in general just wrong...BUT, I love it! :) I just bought it for kicks and it will probably become a shelf queen but I will however take it for a fieldtest and see how it well it actually performs. I can come back with a short review when it's tested.

Yes, please find out how it actually performs.:)
It ain't for me, but I'm always interested to find out how different designs actually perform.

I understand. I love the knives from your part of the world and they seem exotic to me! I know an American maker inspired by Scandanavian designs (he doesn't just copy them)...he may be a member here. I'll try to track him down.

Found him! Corey Carlson at GetThePoint Knifeworks. I like his stuff a lot.

You might also like Ray Laconico's work. Not "Scandanavian" looking but still very, very clean and simple.

Well,

if you like that knife, it´s ok. To me, personally, that whole design is a little bit too overloaded.

When you want to the woods with that. Buy a cheap(er) Mora, a Clipper or to get very oldschool a Mora 711. Use them both and you´ll have direct comparison.

Bet, you´ll hand your tracker knife in the living room for showing it, and the Mora will go the woods with you all the time.

Kind regards
