I should have posted this in the sharpening section - but I want to simply take a poll on what you protect your axe heads with.

Thanks in advance...

You can put mineral oil on it(food safe).

You can put motor oil on it.

Or just put automotive paste wax on it. That's what I put on the exterior of my hunting guns. Works great.

I don't really put anything on mine, just bring them in at night when I come in. When I get them wet (camping or what-have-you), I do what I can to wipe them dry, and clean off any rust by chopping or when I get home. Most surface treatment will rub off when chopping anyways.

WD-40. Its not much protection, as its just mineral spirits (which evaporate) and mineral oil, but I spray it on everything tool-related.

WD-40 actually holds up really well. I know some old dues who use WD40 ONLY on their guns for decades and they look perfect.

Me, I use linseed oil.

mineral oil - swords, axes, straight razors, anything with a significant amount of carbon in it gets wiped down with mineral oil

I rub a mix of orange oil and beeswax into the haft, and rub the axhead with a stick of beeswax priot to using it.

Used motor oil will not only fulfill the recycling bing, but also protect your steel

IMO - WD40 is very short term

And wax is for wood

Have to mention Renaissance Wax too.

I've been using it on my GB Wildlife hatchet for years with no issues.
