  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

What do you put on your Axe Head to protect it?

I use mineral oil and WD-40 for almost everything I'm not going to eat. The floor, the carpet, my desk... I don't mean to use it on all that, but my aim isn't very good.

A note on WD-40 from Wikipedia:
"WD-40's formula is a trade secret. The product is not patented in order to avoid completely disclosing its ingredients.[2] WD-40's main ingredients, according to U.S. Material Safety Data Sheet information, are:
50%: Stoddard solvent (i.e., mineral spirits -- primarily hexane, somewhat similar to kerosene)
25%: Liquefied petroleum gas (presumably as a propellant; carbon dioxide is now used instead to reduce WD-40's considerable flammability)
15+%: Mineral oil (light lubricating oil)
10-%: Inert ingredients"

I've used WD40 since the day's when it was known as Rocket WD40.

I use it to protect and lube most things, and when I ran my own motorcycle workshop, it was my most used liquid/spray of its type.

If I have any thought that it will come in contact with food, I rub the head with the base of the candle I carry for starting fires. It works on rough heads as well as smooth. It is easy to touch up any time if you are out for an extended time. For hatchets that can stay in my pack for months, I tape off the handle and shoot the head with a quick coat of clear paint. I thoroughly clean the head with a scotch pad and clean it with alchohol, not the good kind, before shooting it.

Brownells ospho blue or an equivalent, phosphoric acid based, metal preservative.
Use the tool. Degrease it with soap followed by alcohol, and BUFF the stuff on with a paper towel.
