What do you refuse to do with your knives?

I carry an Umnumzaan and a Leatherman Wave. If you think I'm going to use a $425 knife as a screwdriver or prybar, think again. My Umnum is my SHTF knife. Life or death, put me in the woods with Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins and a bear type knife.

My leatherman wave (original) has a serrated blade and a plain blade. My serrated is my utility edge. Cardboard and the like. Sometimes my gas cap lid get stuck, and I'll pry to open with that. Its thin metal, and its not like I'm trying to pry open a door.

I'm all for improvisation. But I also believe that if you take care of your tools, they'll take care of you. Its not like someone said "Hey Bob, I know that knife works awesome as a screwdriver, but just for sh*ts and giggles, I'm going to engineer a philipps and slotted just for the heck of it." Same thing goes for prying. Take the 2 seconds it takes to grab the right tool, and odds are you'll save your knife and hand for something that really matters.

I refuse to garden with them, because thanks to Murphy, they always end up slipping into the ground right where there is a rock waiting to chip the steal

Serious answer: Mainly, I refuse to ignore common sense.

This! I've seen other people carry knives that are totally FUBAR and they say they're fine with it since "a knife is meant to be used"...they don't seem to get that they are meant to be used to CUT.

Knives are for cutting. And for playing with. I agree about taking care of your tools, and using the right tools. I generally use my work knife for cutting boxes, and my food knife for cutting food. For miscellaneous tasks I have a Leatherman. For prying I have an Atwood prytool...

I won't sell or trade knives given to me as gifts. I'd hand them down to my son though.

I generally baby my knives, because its easier and faster to find a screwdriver or pry bar than it is to grind out a chipped blade or broken tip. If someone asks to borrow a knife, which is rare, I give them the Victorinox Manager on my key ring.

I can't really say . I have knives that are very sharp and pointed and others that are sharp but strong as a pry bar . I guess the one thing I won't do with any of them is throw them . None of my knives are throwing knives .

HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH THIS !

i absolutely will consider/use a knife for prying...if i know a knife can handle a pry job, i'll do it...otherwise i won't unless it's an emergency situation...same with using one as a screwdriver, but that typically is an "emergency" situation...

i've always been in the "knife as a tool" group...probably why i usually favor stout blades over thin slicer types...

I won't use a knife for anything but cutting... My grandfather will use a knife for anything prying, screwdriver, or hammer... He says "the mountain men used their knife for more than cutting" *facepalm* I also prefer others not even touch my knives... I will beat the crap out of my cold steel knives though and let others use...

I always ask people what is the defining characteristic of a knife; I assert that it is a sharp edge, sometimes in combination with a point. Any task that seriously threatens that characteristic is inappropriate to use one's knife for (this includes cutting on hard surfaces). I carry a multitool specifically to have an assortment of basic tools at hand, so there's absolutely no reason to damage one's knife using it for stupid things...

It's a tool, but a specialized tool for specific tasks. You could use a claw hammer as a screwdriver too, or a drill as a hammer, but neither work as well as the proper tool.

I absolutely refuse to pick my nose with my knife. Learned that one the hard way! (with a junglas!)

I also avoid prying and heavy twisting. Gotta be a beater for me to go for it. Rarely carry a beater.

That didn't seem like a bad idea to start with???

Many things here have been mentioned and fully agree with, but one thing I refuse to do is put a dirty knife back into its sheath.

I will never, ever, ever, ever, hand any knife over to my wife. Nothing like watching (in a weird slow motion) a BM Rukus hit concrete (open, on the tip).

Also, I won't sell any of my knives (I don't own any super high dollar knives and I want my boys to fight over my dead body about them)

Bm 760 I may pry with this one a little. Its a tank.

I absolutely refuse to loan or let any one use my knives, going by past experance they usually come back broken or with the borrower cut and complaining that the knife is to sharp, thats why they cut them self.

This one,word for word.

I refuse to keep them in pristine condition for a future flip. I refuse to think of them as collectibles or investments. I use them as I see fit as they are afterall, only tools.
