What do you say to "non-knife people" when they say stupid/ignorant things

I meet two kinds of NKP, the first classification are people who truly are curious and will.appreciate good gear if you can.explain well.

The other kind are the rabidly "anti violence" group who won't accept any logic or reason. These are the same people who are for a "guns for criminals only" crowd. I don't bother with them.

I have a lot of respect for "non-knife" or "non-weapons" or any "non-violence" persons , IMHO they are in a way the best part of us. Should everyone share the same way of thinking, we may all be safer and happier.
But human nature and the world being what it is, we all think different and we all face different realities :)

I don't want to convert other people to my way of thinking, but I expect the same from them.
We can discuss, exchange points of view or opinions but at the end I shall be the only one to decide what is good/bad account riding to my principles....

As I said, because I respect "non-whatever" people, I try to be discreet with my hobbies.
But is one have questions I just won't try to convert him...

For example....
"I don't like knife"
You're right, it makes sense if you don't need to use one

"what do you need THAT for?"
It is a tool. It may be convenient to have one at hand for opening boxes, cutting paper or ropes. I do that in my job.

"That's too scary"
I can understand, but that is your opinion, maybe you're just not familiar enough with such tool.
For what concern me I have always being scared by mowers...

The tactic is quite always the same:
1- accept
2- rephrase and minimize
3- we are on the same side
4- give them another topic

I agree with what the new guy said^.

I don't mind if people are against knives and I won't even try to "convert them" as long as they don't try to preach to me. Just know, in my head, I'm right and you're wrong, end of story...

There will never be a day in my life I go without carrying atleast one knife, even if it becomes 100% illegal I will still have atleast one on me (the ONLY exception is while flying, and I don't do that but once every 5 years or so when someone else dies back in CA) so good freakin luck having a convo with me about how knives are bad, I won't be mean or insult you, but don't expect me to give your next opinion (releated or not) much thought either... Your just diggin your hole...

I could just read a handful of threads and probably get some good responses but, when a person says stuff like "I don't like knives" without offering anything to back up their position or "what do you need THAT for?" Or "That's too scary" how do you respond to these people?

Respond with, "How do you cut a steak or chop vegetables?"

I agree, but would add a group: absolute apathy. They don't carry tools, don't see why you would, don't care about quality, and don't care what you do carry. Even if you open/use a "scary" knife they just shrug you off as a weirdo with no second thought.

I actually meet more of the first group you retailed.

In Florida I say it's my right even the police don't look at you funny.I wear a 12"bench made all the time.we can carry a sword if we want

Ahh yes, there's a few of those. :)

I got asked the other day *while cutting something* why I carry a knife. I said "This has a pocket clip. My pants have a pocket. Some things were just meant to be."

I loved this topic, so I did a video for all my non-Knife friends. :)

Also, If you have a few extra bucks, get some Spyderco Bugs, and just answer with "Why not find out for yourself? Here's a knife."
When I get a few extra bucks I'm going to try it out. :)

I've done that with the Sanrenmu ZB 681, which is a good little knife and cheap enough to give away.

It just takes a witty remark to set them straight. How I would handle it.

Remark: "I don't like knives"
Response: I don't like them either. I love them.

Remark: "what do you need THAT for?"
Response: I use it to separate molecules. What do you normally use?

Remark: "That's too scary"
Response: I agree with you. I overcome my fears by carrying it.

Had this happen at work the other day...
One of the girls saw mine.. Ooooo! Is that a dangerous weapon I see on your desk she asked..
Nope, it's a tool, that's it, just a tool.
An hour later she asks me to open a box for her.. Reached in my desk, handed her a spoon and wished her good luck!

Side note, you mention pocket carry diamond plates. I use a double-sided DMX brand diamond bench stone for sharpening. I know they also sell some pocket-sized stuff, are they, or whatever brand you use, comparable enough to use on your good blades, or do you recommend them only for not so great steels? I'm also looking for good travel-sized sharpening stuff that can preferrably be used even on high end stuff.
Have you tried the Spyderco Double Stuff? Is a 1x5 with the spyderco medium and fine ceramics on either side. It carries well in its own soft leather pouch and if you have any experience with spyderco's ceramics, you know how well they put an edge on :D

I've never had anyone ask me why I carry a knife.
I can't imagine anyone doing that, but it sounds like they do in some places.
If someone doesn't have a knife on them around here people will ask them where their knife is.

That's the way it is where I live also, I can't recall the last time I heard about a knife attack either, Thankfully most people I know were raised to carry a knife and have done so since their father felt they were responsible enough to do so. A pocket knife here is just as common as a cell phone. Well ken were basically neighbors.
