What do you think about doing away with the brass tip on the scabbard?

It almost sounds pefect. You keep the same type of look, with the brass on the throat of the sheath and put the hard leather tip on the bottom for wear. It seems like the best of both worlds. You don't lose the brass on the sheath matching the brass on the knife and it won't punch a hole in your leg.

I can/could live with that too, but I do believe that would be more labor intensive as well as using a bit more material.

I agree with you Yvsa from a shop point of view, I think though it is an easy way to avoid the situation that Berkley mentions in his reply:

Creation of a new and previously unknown leather chape, on the other hand, may get the same passive/aggressive resistance as other novel ideas have in the past.

"Keep the brass, but move it to the throat of the scabbard under the leather*, and replace the tip with tough leather molded.*you know where - where every newbie and a ot of oldtimers who should know better grabs the scabbard with his left hand, fingers over the edge that sometimes gets cut through, to pull it out."

Absolutely agree with Rusty's words -Thats some solid thinking. Personally I feel a scabbard with a chape makes a nice weapon/parrying tool for the other hand to use. But if you MUST get rid of it, go with Rusty's idea :)

I'll cast my vote for going to leather... I have never been fond of the brass. The one sheath that actually gets some wear and tear in the van had it's brass tip fall off in about two days. I like the leather ones that Terry has on his site... they look good and "de-fang" the sheath nicely.

I also like Rusty's idea of a throat. Just makes sense...

While the brass tip looks good on a khukuri, I will not miss it. I would rather have more tip wear than punch marks in my leg.

Yup. Having punctured my ankle while hiking I agree. I find that I have to alter the way I'm working/hiking when wearing a khuk because of possible stab wounds to my legs. Which makes me less likely to grab one in a traditional scabbard.

I almost always grab my 18" AK when planning on doing real work because I have an excellent sheath made By Terry that i strap on my belt(even has a leg-tie!).

Would it be possible to offer the option of the traditional leather with brass for those who want it or possibly a kydex covered with ballistic nylon for the psuedo adventurer? I see Terry does some nice work in this area.

Before we get too far afield on this, "options" would make every khukuri a special order. Uncle would find himself in a stocking nightmare if two scabbards were available. Scabbards are made to the individual blade at BirGorka, and the question is whether to change the tip on the factory scabbard. Kydex and other materials are available from sheath makers here, but wouldn't fly at BirGorkha, any better than a lead balloon. As Berk has stated, taking the brass tip off might not cause a stir among the sarkis. I don't think they would balk at adding a leather tip cover, but they are all steeped in tradition. We just don't know what is tradition, and what is "business as usual". Terry is the man to see if you want something special, and really custom.

Second. And, I'm not even sure I can get rid of the brass tip without the help of the Nepal Army and they're busy chasing Maoists.

here's another vote for ditching the brass tip. Maybe it's good for ice fishing--I've never tried--but otherwise the tip just wants to put a hole in anything nearby that doesn't need one. Anybody that's carried a khuk in a backpack or suitcase must know what I mean. I use a suggestion that I think came from Howard Wallace--a small folded square of cardboard held in place with a rubber band. But I'd rather see the tip eliminated.

Call me a traditionalist if you wish but I would stick with the brass tip. You can aways remove it and replace it with a leather tip or have Terry to do that for you, but the opposite would be much more complicated to do.

I agree with Ivan. I like the way the brass tip looks on the scabbards, but I've been poked by the chapes on my 18" AK and 22" GRS more times than I care to remember. I removed the chape on my GRS ( by accident while trying to straighten the point a bit) a while back, and so far the scabbard is holding up fine.

Actually, the scabbards do hold up pretty well without the brass tip. Maybe that's the solution. If you don't want it take it off.

OK I'll solve this problem. Just have the sarkis start making a sort of small bra to cover the pointy brass end when hiking or the like, that could removed afterward for show. That should take care of the controversy

Foxy

Wouldn't that force you to carry a pair of Khukuris

LOL!:D

Just have the sarkis start making a sort of small bra to cover the pointy brass end when hiking or the like

Tsimi is NOT going to like this one little bit. He doesn't even like the word "cute" but khuks with BRAS:eek:

Seriously though, the idea has potential:) Either that or have the Sarkis churn out a bunch of leather tips that can be epoxyed(sp?)into place OVER the brass, OR onto the scabbard tip. This could be sold as an "aftermarket" item by Uncle Bill, for those who want to remove teh brass(in the case of the tip for the scabbard end), or if we go with the other idea, for those who want to cover the brass with leather as Foxy said.

Uncle, what about leaving the brass tip off and sending it along with the khukuri. Then the customer can add it if they like. They are easy to glue on. I personally like the brass tip.
