I seen some rough rider knives that looked pretty decent but my question is what do you all think of them. Do they hold an edge well? How are they built? Thanks everyone. :)

I have only purchased the Sawcut bone knives.

They are excellent!
The F&F is outstanding and better than many more expensive local knives

They come very sharp
The blades always seem a little less than substantial
That is the difference between RR and more expensive local knives

For $10 there is nothing near them!
Cannot go wrong

I have given all mine as gifts

I have to agree I've been impressed with the quality of RR knives. Lot of bang for the buck.

the first one I bought was terrible, the worst f&f I ever saw.
After that experience I didn't touch 'em for years until I had one gifted to me.

That one was way better and I can wholly agree with neeman.

I think they are good knives and getting better I believe. The fit and finish is great 99%of the time, the blades come razor sharp and they hang in with fairly heavy use and sharpen easily. I have bought a couple of hundred and found two knives to be defective, a whittler whos backspring had a flaw and broke and a horn handle came cracked.

I have found the RR's to be a good buy for the money, I have quite a few and have gifted quite a few to non-knife folks. However I bought some of the new Colts that are also made in China and I think they are a big step up in quality for just a few dollars more. After comparing the two I don't think they are made in the same factory. Grinds are much better, steel feels better, scale material is different for RR's. Expect to pay $15 to 18 for most of them. The brown bone stag is my favorite, don't care for the black stag nearly as well and the black bone titanium look nice too.

The brown stag however is old school all the way with fantastic swedging, great scales, spear point on the peanut...just nice looking knives. The take and hold a great edge as well.

I bought a RR Canoe a while ago and wasn't disappointed at all. Build quality was more then what you'd expect for the price and the bone was real nice too. And, I have to say, one of the sharpest knives out of the box I ever bought! Too bad about the tacky blade etch though, but I'm looking to get rid of that.

A word of caution-- if you buy one RR you will buy more. They are addicting for the money. The best thing about them is that you can try several patterns to see what you like to carry for a little money. Then you can invest in a better quality slippie of the same pattern, knowing you will enjoy it.

I'm in agreement with neeman, the brown sawcut bone is their best line so far.

Also...
They sharpen easily, and there is not a problem of edge burring.
A couple of passes over a Extra Fine DMT and they are sharp!

Here are a few of my favourites. The yellers, the gunstock jigging, the worm groove stag and the newish fileworked acrylic malachite. All 8 for $20.00 less than my new GEC executive whittler in acrylic. ;-))

Best regards

Robin

I agree with what the others said! My copperhead holds an edge better then any slip joint I have ever tried! The steel in the one gifted to me last Christmas is so good it makes me want to buy one! A couple of weeks ago we had our annual Mule Day here in Columbia, and they had the usual knife tent(a small knife show). One guy had quite a few RR, and I thought I would get one. This must have been the older ones because even at the usual low price I couldn't find one I was happy with! I seen some stag whittlers that had the pins pushing the scales completely away from the liners:eek::eek:. They were awful! After this I have decided that the only way I will purchase one is if I can handle them like at SMKWs or some place! One thing is for sure when they are squared away these knives are fantastic for the money!

When you see RR knives with very obvious flaws look carefully at the blade and see if it has had " Second" buffed off of the blade. I bought 6 of the small lock backs on the bay and all had been buffed to take the second mark off the blade. The new "Synthstone malachite" has some problems in that the scales sometimes crack on the light lines in the acrylic. I'm hoping they add some different scales to the fileworked line.

I have a lot of RR's, including some of their FBs. the ones from 2-3 or more years ago are o.k. the ones brought out less than 2 years ago are excellent as has been said by all above. if buying on ebay you need to know which sellers have only the 'newer' ones as they all sell for a similar ridiculously low price, esp when combined with free shipping.
i buy a lot of USA knives too, but i can't resist another good RR which is why i have about 100 of them. endless, interesting variety too.

I have bought about 12 of them, out of that I had one muskrat pattern break. The spring broke, but other than that I use them and carry them.

Ive bought dozens and give them away and use them.Ive never had a problem.I recently bought a Imperial Schrade marked knife that is equal to a RR or a slight cut above in quality.I was surprised because previous Schrade China knives i had were just junk.Maybe they made a deal with the Rough Rider factory.

A breakfast friend has a few rough Riders, and they seem like well finished knives. My only problem with them is that they are too hard for old arthritic fingers to open without a struggle. Nice looking knives though, and Chet gets good service from them.

Good knives at a very good price. I have 7 or 8 and all good users that sharpen easy.

They're pretty good. I've had three. Even if they'd be more expensive they're still be pretty good. At the price they're sold they're really excellent for the money.

From what I've seen they're slightly below the quality of Queen. But not by far as much as the pricing would suggest.
