What do you think this is?

The Hood knife and it's Variants have an interesting History.

A Collaboration with Drama that ended up with just a Few of the Hood knives getting Finished and a some what larger number of Variants getting Made.

So, For a Busse knife it is unusual in that more Variants than the Production
Knife actually got made.

I Saw my First two Hood Variant Knives in June of 2000 or 2001(Darn CRS), I bought them for resale as a Dealer During a Stop at Wauseon without knowing just what they were.

I had them Sitting on a Show Table When a Fella Walked up and asked about them as Hood Knives and procceded to pull one out to compare.

That was When and where I got my First version of the Story.

While there has been some Demand, there has also been a lot of silence about these knives and they seem to disapear into Busse Black Hole Collections.

I got the one Shown above because at the time My Wife wanted a Tanto Style Busse to look at, the other one was very similiar to the one that started this thread.

The Production Hood knife has a some what larger than normal for Busse sized Front Talon hole.

I know where a few are(Production Hood Knives) But I have none myself and the ones I know where are are not currently for Sale.

I hate to say it, but its worth noting that its difficult to make any judgements other then those based on rudementary geometry because of the picture shown. even with photoshop, the jpeg compression artifacting makes any blade features almost invisible, enough so that I'm not even sure if the blade is coated or not.

So.... perhaps because Apprentice's were only allowed to work on smaller blades? This is a big ol' long shot - but your kydex sheath shows the original talon hole location, hense it was a modification made later on after the sheath was originally pressed? Apprentice knives never got to the finished quilted micarta/tube fastener stage?

Unless there is something specifical with regards to the rules of what apprentices can and can't do on blades, I wouldn't know where to begin other then to look for grinding and geometry styles.

(originally from gator)

the thing that I'm not sure about, is why is there no talon hole? on all of the modern busse's I've seen, there is either a talon hole, a bottle opener, or its a really far away from the normal production line modification/variation/custom peice), and it seems like all the hoods woods had the talon hole moved upward to be in front of the micarta

I picked this up last year with the help of another HOG and I just wonder if any of you can tell me what it is. This is a test for you guys because I have talked to Jerry about this, and he has given me the scoop on it.

This may help you hone your skills and prepare for shows when you find something and you don't know if you should buy it or pass because you don't know for sure what it is.

This is not for sale, this is just a quiz of your Busse knowledge.

Along with your thoughts on the piece what do you think you would pay for it if it were on a table of a non-busse dealer?

Blade is coated black, blade length is over 9"

For some of you HOG's this will be an easy one

Andre,
correct me if I am wrong but this was Hoods design. I did not realize that there was many variations. I saw something like this one years back and it is what inspired the Anaconda by Tops. I do know Jerry has a crapload of these blanks hidden somewhere. I have told him that I would be more than willing to store those blanks for him.

That is an easy one. It's a knife. And a big one at that.

Cobalt,

I make a pretty good effort to not Say how many of what blanks Jerry Has, Had or was planning to make.

The interesting part here for me is that this Knife Blank as a whole has been kept quiet and that there were more Variants made than the Production knife.

By the Way, the knife at the top may well be the other of the two I got long ago, I sold it in a Basic #9 kydex sheath, that would be why it (the Sheath)looks like the knife would have a Talon Hole.

Jerry actually posted a pic a few years ago showing all of the Hoods Blanks he had cut and that were sitting on the shelves, there were hundreds of them cut, but nothing else had been done to them.

I wish I could find that pic

So how about the "Better pictures"!!!!

Here are some better pics and with a few others that I think were made from the Hood Blanks (although the bottom one is questionable) Check out the similarities in the talon hole (or lack of), the handles, the overall length and the spine thickness

I'm still not sure, even with the updated images, what would be present on the knife that shows that it is not an apprentices work.

(given that you've already said that jerry debunked that)

Nice collection Eric. I really like the bottom knife. That blade profile is sweet.

Are these the blanks you're thinking of Eric?

Kevin
You rock!

I've been trying to find that pic. Now I have it saved. Thanks that is the pic

It also looks my memory is poorer than I had imagined, I remembered it being a bigger shelf ;)

:D:D

There is currently Some Question as to exactly how Many Hood knives got completed.
(other than as Variants that is)

My Memory would say the Five got delivered, But I have recently heard anout a possible 6th.

Maybe one Prototype and five Production knives, as part of a Numbered run?
The One I know about is number 18, I think, but with only Five completed.

As I say, I first learned about these knives when a Fella Walked up to the Table and pulled one out, I later got Jerry's Side of the Story and have not so far ever repeated it.

I do hope to own one some day but that seems pretty unlikely
