What do you use your EDC for?

I don't have any particular reason or plan for an EDC. I just always try to have at least one pocket knife on me when I leave my driveway. Sometimes friends need to use my knife sometimes I need it at work. I just never know. I do know that when I need a knife and don't have on I can be a real peckerhead about it. I keep some small folders in my truck my motorcycle and even in my desk at work just in case...

I edc my knives in the event that another knife package should arrive in the mail.

I have a problem :p

Cutting Sod, branches, valve boxes, sprinkler hose, felt, wiring, shingles, digging out wood or notching etc - Spyderco Cara Cara Combo

Boxes, Zip ties, rubber, wood, plastics and meat - Boker Automat Kalashnikov 101

A mix of all the above along with thin metal, opening cans, breaking glass, tires to make dampeners for little projects - Emerson CQC 15

It doesn't stick to this usually but I somewhat plan my knives for my daily duties in the morning.

I just used my Queen Congress to cut a King Size Snickers Bar into bite sized slices... :D

I used to be able to get into anything by just tearing with my fingers and teeth (whilst growling). Nowadays, I can't even manage to open a packet of crackers, without my SAK.

I haven't clawed, bitten and scratched my way to the top of the evolutionary heap to not use tools.

While a mild mannered engineer by day, I am MIDDLE-AGED URBAN HOMEOWNER (Look awe-struck) by night and on weekends.

I trim plastic fittings for the sprinkler system, trim plants, open boxes and blister-packs, trim the excess plastic off the edges of parts for the washer or toilet, cut the ends off of old water hoses so I can put new fittings on.

I pretty much have a cutting tool in my pocket from the time I get up till the time I crash out at night. It might be a traditional style or it might be something with a locking blade. One way or another, it is something that cuts.

Before I leave for work in the morning I open up a drawer in the kitchen and pick out which knife I am gong to carry for the day. It usually boils down to either my Sebenza a Paramilitary or my newest knife- a Boker Trance. This is usually my favorite part of the day....

Today it was the Seb...

Im a Mechanic by trade. So you all can imagine what I use it for. Not twine, tape, and boxes (well i guess those too), but belts, hoses, plastic, wire loom, etc. But being a wrench, theres always the right tool for the job, so i cut zip ties, wire, etc with the appropiate tools, not my knife.... It takes a beating. It get gas, oil, grease, grime, metal shavings in it. Knives are meant to be used, not babied in my opinion. I recently switched from a Delica 4 to a Griptilian. I LOVED the vg-10 the delica offered. Now I get to see how well the 154cm holds up in a rough environment. Cant wait!

Hey guys!

I know that the subject is very vague, but in general what do you find yourself using your EDC for the most? Some guys will say cardboard boxes at work, I've even had a few say cleaning underneath their fingernails.:barf:

Anyways, just a general thread regarding the usefulness of our knives, and possibly showing us uses that we've never thought of before!

Have a great one guys! We're in hump-day now, at least we're halfway to Friday!:)

When I was still working I used my EDC for cutting boxes open, breaking boxes down, cleaning finger nails, cutting up fruits, cutting hoses and so forth.
Now that I am retired it is still the same as above. It is always in my pocket for what ever need may arise.

This question seems to pop-up fairly regularly (in fact: Right at the bottom of the first page of article listing is "What do you use your EDC for?"), and, no offense intended, but it seems kinda silly. I mean, after all: What do you suppose people use their EDCs for? Cutting things, maybe? Ok, yeah, I'm sure some people use their EDCs to clean their fingernails (I don't, anymore, since I started EDCing ~3" sharp blades), but I imagine most people carry knives for cutting things.

I often wonder how people get through the day without a knife. Especially those people with short fingernails like me. When someone says they don't have a knife, I'm just stunned. I hate it when I'm flying and can't carry an edge. I usually have at least 2 blades within reach at all times--a SAK and something else.

My thoughts exactly! I've often had people say to me, "Why do you always need to have a knife?" or, "There's no need to carry a knife all the time." The funny thing is those are the same people who always come to me needing to borrow a knife. And I agree with the flying thing, it drives me nuts to not have a blade with me.

I usually carry at least two knives (and another concealed) and a multi-tool. Some of the duties include: cutting boxes open, breaking down boxes, loose strings, opening mail, cutting zip ties, opening packages of food, cutting up food, cutting the plastic ties that Staples puts on their boxes of paper, and generally anything I need done. And I carry them for personal protection, but haven't had to use them for that purpose in almost 6 years.

Like everyone else has said, I could probably have found another tool for the job, but my knife is always either in my pocket or on my desk so it's right there when I need it. I've always said, you never notice how much you need a knife till you don't carry one.

Dip which country of Africa do you visit? I use my Kershaw TacBlur for cutting boxes open, cleaning my nails, cutting stray threads, and just anything that needs to be cut really.

fd, I've spent a lot of time in South Africa over the last 3 years (eastern cape, and capetown) and in February I'm leaving to serve in the Peace Corps somewhere in Western Africa. Won't know the specific country until next week.

Are you over there very often?

And thanks to everybody else for your replies, I'm really enjoying this!

babakanoosh45, I have the slim line trapper version of your stockman, and it's my favorite premium trapper period. It has the most incredible heat treat and will out perform all my other Queens including the D2 models!
