What Do You Use Your Punch For?

Yes, I've been into Gordo size and quit cutting them. I punch them, per se. I cut a triangle with my riverboat gambler. It draws much better, and the cover remaining keeps leaves from getting I'm my mouth. I'm not a pro cigarlo guy though. You don't need a cutter or a cigar punch, a good old traditional quill, pen, etc will poke a hole just fine.
I wonder if it could be used as a cigar punch in a pinch?

If I could find a wharncliffe whittler with punch and Spey blade I would probably never need to carry a slipjoint again!!

I use the punch for everything besides slicing- Prying/drilling/scraping/reaming/knot work/cleaning fingernails/getting things at hard-to-reach places. Really it's a tool addition to save the blade. It's very likely I have one on me, and if I don't then I want one- which is why I push for a Magnum/22 with punch as a forum knife!

Pardon the modern, but this Boye folder started my love with marlin spikes/punches- and I need to update the picture!

It is by far the most used accessory tool on a knife for me, I don't need screwdrivers/can openers/corkscrews in my daily life, but seem to find a use for punches more often!

Bottom right, is that a black lip pearl LG cattle baron? I'd like to find one of those........

I carry a Vic Pioneer almost every day and probably use the punch more than any other tool blade. It's excellent for all the random poking, prying and scraping chores one encounters. I've dislodged pebbles stuck in my boot tread, removed child-proof tabs on lighters, cleared jammed staplers in the office, untied knots in string/laces, poked holes in plastic/leather/tough canvas, scraped off dried paint/caulking, made scribe lines in wood/metal, the list goes on and on. I've used my sharp blades for these things too, but the awl really spares my edges a lot of wear and tear.

I think my ideal pocket knife might be a stockman or whittler pattern with a main blade, cap-lifter and awl. Haven't seen one yet, so it's the Pioneer for me! :)

Yes it is! A great knife in both looks and function, although it's a big thick and heavy for carry in scrubs. I had to trim the spine of the Spey to access the long pull of the clip, but that also allowed me to play with making it a stronger Spey, and also playing with the swedge! It's my first choice for woods carry if I don't want a saw- it has everything I need- all the blades, punch, beauty....

Cuts Like a Kris : would you mind telling me/us what models those knives are? that black lip pearl LG stockman is a beaut. i was wondering what the punch was made from and if you modded or tried to mod it. i checked his site quick, and he lists titanium as the material, but i don't know if it's always been that particular material. i'm aware that he tested out a few different types of steel for the blades over the years and i'd guess the spikes as well. the knife to the right looks a lot like a schatt & morgan knife i have, so it's interesting to see the broken tip on the punch! thanks, Neal

I've got to say, man, that sounds like a great knife. Make the main blade a wharncliffe or a small hawkbill, and I'd be all over that!

The punch make a useful fork in a pinch. I use it to eat cut up fruit for lunch. Great for spearing grapes.

Neal70, I'll try.

This first is the Boye dendritic Cobalt, no steel anywhere on this knife, the blade is cobalt and all other metal is Titanium.

The second I'm not sure who made- the markings are "Blue Steel" and that's it. A very nice slipjoint, but the springs have been mushroomed, so sadly it needs repair.

SAK Electrician+ or harvester+ (model with saw)

That is a S&M next. The tip was modified by me as I wanted a more robust punch for woodworking etc, and as it came from the factory was too thin for my uses. One of my spear points main blade knives that sees pocket time.

The little Imperial Jack is next. One of my favourite knives of all time. I got it for 50 cents at a garage sale, converted the low clip to a wharncliffe, and it makes a perfect small pocket knife, with scalpel straight edge and punch for any other tool uses. I've posted a thread at least once looking for a similar small punched knife, to no avail. This knife is my inspiration to try and get a GEC Magnum/22 with punch secondary as a forum knife choice. It's invelieveably useful having a micro scalpel/punch in pocket, and are so unobtrusive that a second larger knife is easily carried. Sadly the back sprung on this guy came apart, and as I can't afford a custom replacement and can't find another like it, I wait until I can repair it/make my own I guess!!

Keen Kutter I got from Charlie/Waynorth. Was my first Harness Jack as well as first Keen Kutter, great old user, that is very hefty, and still gets used from time to time.

The next is a Wade cattle knife. Really worn primary clip blade, with secondary smaller clip, that also got my WharnKris treatment, by becoming a wharncliffe primary/clip secondary. Given away on here one year, to one of our sheath makers/leather benders, I think in a past birthday giveaway. I miss her but last I heard she was cutting leather like crazy, so that makes me happy!

Then the Cattle Barron.

I've got more pics of the specific knives if you wish. Also have more punch knives if you would like more variety.

I tend use my pioneer's punch like an abuser knife blade. Keeps me from prying or doing other dumb things with the main blade....oh I and I once drilled a hole in my leather belt!

I'm glad someone asked this question - I'm only just getting in to traditionals myself, and was wondering the same thing!

C like a K: sorry it's taken awhile to respond; our family is in the throes of a nasty cold. yes! i absolutely would like to see more pics, both of the already posted knives and any others you might have. that is the same s&m that i have, and i wondered how well your modding of the tip worked out. i too am a wood worker and have used punches to start nail and screw holes, for reaming out holes to enlarge them, and as a small scraper.:) i'd be intrigued to know what else you do with yours and especially if i can be convinced to shorten the punch on my s&m. really sucks about your imperial Jack; i don't think i've seen another knife that size with a punch, but my memory sucks. if i spot one i'll keep you in mind. i'd second the idea of a forum knife with a punch-the only surprising thing to me is that it hasn't yet been done! thanks, Neal

The 85 double channel punch is the best punch Ever IMO. It punches perfect holes up to just under 1/4 inch.
It is also a wonderful tiny scoop chisel that I use for hollowing out basswood for Sami sheaths that get covered in leather.

Best regards

Robin

there is one more thing i have used a punch for, although it's almost verboten to talk about: when i smoked a tobacco pipe they work well for scraping the bowl of the pipe out(gently used), and for occasionally clearing the pipe stem of debris or whatever. thanks, Neal

I use mine to punch steady holes when leatherworking, and also to scrape gluing spots in the same crafr. I also might use one to untie knot, feed cord through tight spots and use it as scraper if knife is not suitable for it.

I think everything I use mine for has been listed, have used it as an ice pick for a bag of ice at a party.
I love the few Charlie C sfo harness jacks I have. I usually carry an alox vic since I lost my S&M scout, though.

Sometimes I use the punch for field repairs; however, I primarily use it to strike a fire-steel. It throws great sparks.

The first time I ever opened my ALOX SAK Farmer I used the sharp edge to cut the crap out of my finger - didn't realize it had a sharpened edge - I don't plan to use it for that purpose again! OH
Ps I do use them for digging/picking out stuff as appropriate.
