What does BladeForums think about Kerambits?

It is true, i have been in a few tight spots in my life, and in does situation i really don’t se how a karambit would have given me an advantage, apart from retention.
It’s a cool gardening tool. Given a choice I don’t see way you would go for a tool that is limited like the karambit. A knife of any kind against grappling?

The best thing is to keep your distance.

i) They are very safe knives to use,
ii) Most end up in the hand with the blade protruding as if the tool is held by a sabre grip, but of course that isnt the case
iii) They clip to anything karabiner wise making them impossible to lose unlike sheath knives or pocket knives.
iv) The fixed bladed karambits are generally much nicer to use than folders for numerous reasons, which ill spare going into the obvious details of here.

I think I would prefer something small, hardy, and (relatively) cheap like the Izula II, but with a bigger hole so you can hook your finger through it. The needle point tip makes me weary about a snapped tip, and I don't cut a lot of netting so a straight or drop point blade is more useful to me.

Thanks for the inputs everyone. I am quite interested in training with one. Any good sources on the web or DVDs to check out? They do look like a lot of fun.

Oh, anyone have pics of some exceptional ones?

Look at the Steve Tarani DVDs.
If you want a good/polyvalent karambit 5.11 make an excellent fixed blade specified by s. Tarani (not hawksbill but wharmcliffe blade).
If you want a fantastic custom, you need a Richard Derespina kbit (N* 8 and 13).

BTW, karambit is easy to use, just like a push knife or a griffe. Devastating effect in a close range situation against an unarmed but dangerous opponent... I used my emerson one time against a big drunken guy, 2 deep slashes and I was running safe.
But, I'll never try this against a knife, definitely not the same competences are required.

I have a waved 5.11 karambit and love it, however in all honesty its not completly practical. Deploying it with the wave feature scares people, combined with the aggressive look of it most are terrified. For daily utility tasks its average at best, I much prefer a normal folder for EDC, but still enjoy karambits regardless :D

and it would be difficult to find a more pug-fugly design. :barf: :thumbdn:

Kerambits are for people who think Chuck Norris movies are documentaries.

Oh really?

Sorry for the poor quality of pics with this horrible borrowed camera, but these are beautiful knives.
The top one is forged by Rick Marchand, who I'm sure you all know is top armourer to the ninja clans.

"i read somewhere that american air marshals carried karambits. primarily because it was a good close quarters combat weapon that was extremely difficult to disarm owing to the finger hole/holes. heres a pic of mine. "
I know an Air Marshall personally and he carries an auto BM. I will ask him about this though.

Not a fan of the English language either, eh?

What can I say? I'm just a big fan of Dr. Seuss. ;)

Sorry, man, but those suckers look to me like they went back for a second helping of the ugly stick.:barf: Especially the bottom one. I guess beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. :p

I guess some people just have to crap on the choices of others to prop up their fragile sense of self-esteem.
Sad.

Wow, calm down there buddy. Just because I don't share your taste in knives, you feel the need to get into a snit and flat out insult me? I assumed you had a little more class than that, but it seems I was seriously mistaken.

If that's all it takes to hurt your fragile little feelings, you really need to learn to suck it up, buttercup. :thumbdn:

My feelings are just fine, thanks for asking.:)
But perhaps you should examine what motivates you to jump in a thread and say how ugly something is.;)

Well, see, I posted in this thread because someone asked me a question; Someone asked what the users of Bladeforums thought of Kerambits. Contrary to what you seem to think, I don't need your permission to reply with my opinion, and I don't need to temper my response to avoid offending your delicate sensibilities.

Now, perhaps you can explain what is it that compels you to whine and moan when someone else's opinion just happens to differ from yours. I myself learned that the world didn't revolve around me back when I was small. Perhaps, since you clearly don't have the benefit of that lesson, you never bothered to learn how to put your big girl panties on and deal with it, but that isn't my problem, kiddo. ;) It is also not my duty to indulge your ego with this bickering. If you feel like it, go ahead and continue to whine about my opinions - it won't change them, and I don't need to defend them (least of all to you). ;)

Have a nice day. :)

Here we go again... There is some topics who always finish like this, to bad for the op.

Oh well, hopefully the OP got what he wanted. I don't know about the rest of you, but when I first held the Emerson super Karambit I found the use to be rather intuitive. I immediately knew it was primarily used in a reverse grip with slashing motions and that due to the needle tip you would slash at fleshy areas like the belly and neck and avoid the ribcage due to bones.

Well, it's possible that I owe Dorito Monk an apology for getting a tad heated in this thread.
I had an epiphany as to why I took it a bit personal though while I was at the gym...
You see, the Marchand Karambit was made at my request, and I was involved in the design process.
So, not only is it one of my favourite knives, and not only did I spend hundreds of dollars on it, it has a bit of me invested into it as well.
So, I guess that led to me getting more annoyed than I would have otherwise, if it just happened to be a knife I happened to like.
So, that's about it. Sorry for getting too personal about it.

Even though the world DOES revolve around me.:D
