What does Bladeforums think about this design? CAD drawings...

So for one of my engineering classes this past quarter, our final project was to make a CAD model of something with attention given to the manufacturing aspect. Naturally, I decided to do a knife! It has some rough edges and missing final touches, but I only had 3 weeks to make it in a 20 unit quarter, and a lot of the work went into internal stuff like ball bearings and lightening cavities. Anyway, thought you guys would get a kick out of it. A lot of the features you can see: lowrider reversible clip that can be removed to use the lanyard hole, hollow grind, wave deployment/bottle opener, etc. I mapped the ergos to fit my hand, but left plenty of room for larger hands. Also, it looks like an axis lock, but it's actually a different kind of lock I made up for the knife.

Couple of CAD models and quick renderings:

looks great but wave may get caught in pants due to the bottle opener. nice solid design though.

Thanks for the feedback! I was thinking that it wouldn't be a problem, though, because the blade would have to be open to catch something on the second hook, and there would have to be something on the outside of the pocket for it to catch. The blade of a waved knife doesn't get fully opened until momentum pushes it all the way out, which happens when the knife is already outside the pocket.

I like the color scheme and materials you chose. I'd like to see an exploded view of that locking mechanism.

I like it, too. It kinda has a H&K look to it. The deep pocket clip is a nice design. I suppose it would screw into the backspacer?

How does the lock mechanism differ from an Axis lock? Looks like a ton of work went into it. Good job!

I really like it but the deep carry clip kinda defeats the purpose of the wave. Wave=quick deployment no?

I think it has almost every possible opening mechanism (not a bad thing). The flow of the knife is nice too. I was worried about the wave catching too but your explanation cleared that up. My favorite part by far though is that pocket clip, I love it!
That's some fancy computering sh!t, Mav! That's an altered line from Top Gun, your knife reminds me of a fighter jet.
Oh, one more thing. You're way smarter than me!

i really like the ambidextrous deep riding clip.
not a fan of the wave, but that's personal preference and not a design flaw.
nice renderings.

+1

Attempting to wave draw a knife with a deep carry clip leads to blade shaped holes in the wall (or worse, the buddy you're showing it off to). For effective wave draw, I suggest at least 1.5" of butt exposed while inside the pocket. Also needs a lanyard hole. Shorten the point of the wave hook approx .125" and it's a go. Everything else looks sweet.

LOL nice job with it... ;)

Looks really similar to an emerson, everything from the blade sweep/shape.. to the handle.. but not neccessarily a bad thing...
The colorations seem to compliment each other... would be a nasty ass tactical knife ;)...

slap some S35nv on there and ur set ;) haha.. (not a huge dan of "wave") feature..

I think the biggest thing that jumped out at me was that no matter how nice the ergos were, that clip would mess them up bad. that thing is huge and rides really high off the handle. probably my main reason for loving the spec bump is the way that the pocket clip sticks to the handle and does not interfere with the very nice handle much.

I TOTALLY DISAGREE!..

if anything the clip is the BEST part of that knife... do you know how nice that'd ride and how low.. in the pocket?... i'd just really get rida the wave or w/e =p.. never found use for em.. maybe in battle.. but even then thats a LONGSHOT...

=p all pocketclips should start at the end of the handle like this 1.. just because of ease to conceal it...

Hmm, i wonder how the clip of a Spyderco Sage 1 would look *a lil modified to fit to the end of this handle* ... i dono i think that'd be sick...

dude if you think its able to be made.. and you truly love this knife then show it to a knife maker and see what hes gana charge ya... it'll be a hell of a lot... but think about it.. NO ONE in the world will have it but u ;).. + u made it.. how much more "rambo" can u get hehehehe..

This will shed some light on the no-go status of deep carry clips.

Thanks for sharing your expert opinion on the wave feature, CM (nice to hear from Bladeforum's "King of Waves" :D). I was thinking that a change in technique might reduce the risk of javelining the knife. Since the knife has ball bearings, it would open much more easily, and shouldn't require you to push the knife as hard against your pocket (for me, the part about pushing back against the corner of the pocket destabilizes my grip on waved knives more than anything else). Also, the polished clip should let the knife slip out more easily, and I made the clip fairly long so you can grip more of the knife. What are your thoughts on this? I also noticed that you seem to use the lanyard along with the clip. I was under the impression that most people used lanyards instead of clips so they could carry the knife fully in the pocket and just pull it out, so I placed the lanyard hole under the clip so you could use it with the clip removed. Could you string the lanyard around the clip, or does the positioning of the hole the way it is now really get in the way of your opening technique?

Also, for those of you who don't like the wave feature: can't you just take the knife out of your pocket without waving it open? I can try to cut down on that feature, but it might be difficult because it serves three purposes that I don't want to compromise too much: the wave, the bottle opener, and creating a thumb ramp to stop your hand from advancing onto the blade.

When's the sprint run? :)

Looks great. bottle opener is a nice add but i agree with some other posts that the clip is my favorite innovative idea. I think with the right bend, it wouldn't interfere with the ergonomics. Wish more of my pocket pals carried deep like this would allow. I'd go for the waveless model when its ready ;)

great work. looks really good. Personally, I hate knives with one or more deep finger choils in the handle as I feel it limits you to one grip, and even then only if your hands are the right size. But some knives with them are very popular so maybe it's just me.

I'd say 75% of my grip is emphasized on the butt of the knife which is why I'm saying 1.5" needs to stick out. The lanyard hole should be in the normal Emerson position. Do not eliminate the pocket clip ... no clip = no wave. Get a waved knife and experiment.
