What does Bladeforums think about this design? CAD drawings...

I absolutely hate those kinds of clips. I don't see the purpose of a super deep carry clip. It's faster for me to just carry a knife at the bottom of my pocket if I don't want people to see it.

The "spike" formed between the two finger grooves can make some grips uncomfortable. That's that case on one current production fixed blade with a similar handle feature - the Benchmade Nimravus. Adventurous owners/modders tend to grind those down a bit.

So for one of my engineering classes this past quarter, our final project was to make a CAD model of something with attention given to the manufacturing aspect. Naturally, I decided to do a knife! It has some rough edges and missing final touches, but I only had 3 weeks to make it in a 20 unit quarter, and a lot of the work went into internal stuff like ball bearings and lightening cavities. Anyway, thought you guys would get a kick out of it. A lot of the features you can see: lowrider reversible clip that can be removed to use the lanyard hole, hollow grind, wave deployment/bottle opener, etc. I mapped the ergos to fit my hand, but left plenty of room for larger hands. Also, it looks like an axis lock, but it's actually a different kind of lock I made up for the knife.

Couple of CAD models and quick renderings:

Nice looking knife! Kind of looks like what would happen if an Emerson had children with an MOD! Nice work.

I...Love...The...Design
I mean, every knife guys tried to design their own folders, right?
Me too, I've drawn A LOT, but...that thing is very good lookin'.
Love the pointy blade, love the hollow grind, love the clip, love the thick handle slaps, love the lock too if it's AXIS ;) and the grippy look on the handle too, and the fiber glass too man :)) a lot of things to love
but I don't really think the wave feature will work fine, due to the opposite side of it that I consider the bottle opener, it's gonna catch your pocket, and rip it :))
Don't wanna wear a sexy pant in a tactical situation tho

What do you think about making the longish protruding part shorter? It'll still work as a bottle opener and wave and it won't stick out as much.

What pushes the rod forward? If helical spring then I love it:) I'll participate in a run of it :)

BTW, excellent design, really :)

You should seriously follow up on this design. A lot of people here would buy one.

Thanks, everyone! After taking a closer look, I think a shorter prong really would be better. The grip on the knife is pretty large so the thumb ramp doesn't have to be too big, and having a shorter hook would give the knife more clearance from the bottle when using the bottle opener. Maybe something like this?

I also added an indent in the handle for the scale to fit into, since it and the clip were protruding a little too much.

BTW how about cutting off 1 finger choil? :P
I think one finger choil for the index finger is just fine, like the coldsteel lawman...just my opinion

i say if the pocket clip is going to cover the hole get rid of it, for those who want a lanyard and use the clip like i do for waved mods, i do as follows

it sticks just enough to get a good pinch grip, and the lanyard really helps with the rest of the fingers for a nice secure wave opening

Perhaps you could analyze the area of the thumbstud. Imagine the hole on the blade where you insert the thumbstud, depending on the type of method you insert it then the prong may be weakened by the hole. If the thumbstud is the pushed in type then there is a real possibility of cracking the blade.

Nice folder, me likee :)

I agree with Brets-ftw, I have never had a problem on my Vantage(or any other deep carry waved knives) doing exactly what he did, with or without the lanyard. Maybe you could slightly alter the clip design and add the lanyard hole to the clip.

Other than that, the one thing I might be inclined to change is the thumbstud. I just generally don't like them, and I think the cutout for the wave would serve well enough as an opening hole anyways.
But I do think the knife is very appealing as is, good job

Listen to Charliemike about the fine points of Wave design. He knows his stuff.

I like the design overall. If it were mine to tweek I would remove the bottle opener, and shrink the Wave hook, you don't need that much. I would also smooth out the handle some reducing the magnitude of the finger indents and protrusions. I like the hooked pommel, more knives need that.

One very minor thing, I notice almost all of the lines of this knife are curves, except one. On the spine of the handle from the midpoint where it slopes down to the pomel is a straight line. I think that's visually jarring. I would change it to a gentle curve, it would probably improve ergos too.

Well, I may not be a wave expert, but I just added a lanyard to one of my wave opening knives, and I'm finding it much easier to operate now. Thanks for the tip, guys!

Did you watch my video I posted earlier?

I think it's an interesting design, though it goes against many of my personal preferences. Like others have said though, try to follow up and get it made! It looks pretty unique!
