What does 'X X X X' signify on a blade?

I will make an assumption....I know, I know

If you live in Eugene Oregon and you sell Kershaws then you KNOW what the XXXX's mean. Period.

If Stainz doesn't reply with a response by tomorrow, I'm going to ask one of the MOD's to put this in GB&U
so we can find out who it is.

Because they are functional. The factory QC check they fail doesnt prevent them from being usable. Of the "Quad X" seconds I have, only 2 of the six can I find any fault with.

Well, it's taking it's sweet time to get here, too. It was 'accepted' by USPS Monday - left Portland, OR, finally, Friday (That was some snow!).

No mention of the vendor has been made thus far - I don't know if it is appropriate here - or before I receive the knife. At this point, as I have not been advised otherwise, I am expecting a new 1725CB with a bag and box, a la the one my wife had her brother bought me earlier. I guess the real aggravation is that I will have paid more for whatever it is that I am getting, too, than she did! I am not sure I wanted two of the same knives, either - not a sellor problem there, of course.

I guess I 'assumed', as potentially dangerous as that may be, that the 'X X X X' referred to the different G10 scales - the pictured one looks like natural G10 with the JYD 'pattern' on it, rather than the grippy plain black G10 others had on their sites - and like the one I got from my wife. It sounds like I was mislead. I have had a few contacts with the seller over when it shipped and needing a tracking number, which initially was stated as an incomplete number. No mention was made of the knife's not being a factory fresh new product was made, although, at least to my eye, the original ad did imply it was as it said 'new'.

So, Kershaw sells buckets of rejects locally up there in OR - and folks can buy them up and resell them on evil-bay. Nice. I love entrepreneurship. I did just see some so-marked Damascus Shallots - at a reduced price and clearly indicated as 'blems' - that's a fair site and offering - my purchase really wasn't.

Interesting about the meaning of 'X X X X' elsewhere... here, I'd wonder if it was a shirt size way too big for even me! Merry Christmas - and have a Happy New YYear, everyone!

I have a CB Leek blem from kershawguy and it's perfect as far as I can tell. Blems are an excellent deal and I would buy them again. Hell, I buy my shoes (New Balance) as factory seconds and I can never tell what's supposedly wrong with them. But I would be pretty miffed if I bought a blem and paid full price without knowing it was a blem, since there is no warranty.

I would like to know the name of this seller, too.

His ebay name is :thumbdn:bcbegan
I just looked and he has more items on the bay, and still not saying that they are 2nd's. "Brand New Kershaw Junk Yard Dog Composite Blade 1725 CB" but still not saying what the XXXX are. Also it has the grey/green handle scales not black like it should.

I've reported him to ebay. I also sent him a question, but it was more of a statement instead. We'll see how he responds.

Don't get me wrong, I have a few blems and are perfectly happy with all of them. Other than the slight grind mishap on the S60V Blur (which will be fixed real soon), I can't find anything wrong with them. I see no problem selling them on ebay, as long as they are disclosed as such and the buyer knows about the lack of warranty. Kershawguy does it right, and deserves credit for his fully disclosed listings.

EDIT: Here's the sellers reply to my email:

These are not used but new from the factory outlet and they did not
disclose to me that they are seconds also no warranty is giving. Thanks for
you interest.

I agree with Mike. This guy lives in Eugene Oregon, and he doesn't know about Kershaw's Factory Sale and the blems? Don't think so.

Looks like I'll wait on ebay to see what happens now...

Guys like him always cause themselves more trouble than it's worth in the long run. One step foreward, 3 sideways, two back. After Brad's e-mail he can't say he didn't know, which appears to be his defense up to now. Joe

I just looked at his other items that "completed" and they were all XXXX.
He even sold a Leek that had the XXXX dated SEP 04, saying it was lightly used.

Of course, that is the 'culprit'. And he still lists them as new! According to his tracking number, it has been processed 'out' of Birmingham PO yesterday - I live in a suburb - maybe it'll get to my mailbox today. I'll report - maybe with a photo - later today - if it arrives. Then, I can be more 'vocal'.

No one likes to get scammed. I guess the worst part is that my wife ordered me one of the regular 1725CB's I wanted - from a store - with pouch, sheet, & box - brandy new - for less than the refurb/blem/second I 'won'! I was under the impression 'New' meant it would come similarly - sheet, pouch, and box included - certainly he didn't state otherwise. I really like the one I got from her, too. My son saw the one she gave me - and thought it was too big. Being a bit tapped, my desire was to get the 1725CB for him. I had ordered him a Buck 850 Bravo earlier for Christmas, and oddly just had to look at it before wrapping it. It was defective - back to the vendor on their dime - quickly - and a fast replacement (There are good evil-bay knife folks!). The G10 scales still are proud of the frame on one end - a design fault they haven't made a 'fix' for as of yet. Buck is 'working on it'... his birthday is next month - I have that covered. I bought him ammo for Christmas. It's been an expensive, and somewhat dissappointing, Christmas here knife-wise. For what I've wasted, I could have had a Busse. Okay, a small Busse!

If for nothing more than satisfaction (and to stir him up a bit) file a paypal dispute. They will want to know why, then you can unload on him.

Dave sent him an email on the 21st telling him what he was doing is wrong, then on the 28th he replies to me that he didn't know anything about blems...A classic rip-off artist.

I hope it works for you Stainz.

I just sent him a message through evil-bay... I think his 122 sales with a 100% rating is about to drop. I just received a small padded envelope with a greyish G10 scaled 1725CB wrapped in bubble wrap. The knife has the X X X X on it - with an Oct 08 date (Like my really new black G10 1725CB). It seems fine - with no torsion spring, it will likely be fine, as it shaves and cuts paper as well as the black one, and neither have any visible blemishes. Still, I will follow-up on this with evil-bay and the pay-pal folks - advertising something as a 'Brand New Kershaw 1725CB' and delivering an 'as-is' factory second/blem/reject or whatever, just isn't right.

I don't fault Kershaw in this - now that I know what the X's mean, I will be more careful. Certainly, they have the right to dispose of their less-than-perfect examples as they want - and the label of X's identifies them as such. Less than scrupulous vendors can take advantage of the ininitiated, however, and that is a shame. This wasn't his first dance. Caveat Emptor, indeed!

PS The grey G10 does have the JYD 'pattern' of lines & rivets - interesting looking. Is that a new or old version compared with the rough black G10?

First, email him and tell him its a factory second or blem, and you bought a brand new knife with a full factory warranty, as his was advertised as new. Then hit him upside the head with ebay and PayPal. You'll get farther with PayPal.

Can you post a picture of this knife?

Actually, this is getting more and more common on eBay.
About 2 months ago, I won an auction for a Tyrade - and wasn't told what the XXXX meant. My first high-end Kershaw - and a lie by omission. Of course eBay and Paypal haven't done anything - I suppose its my fault for not knowing, but I found the auction about 5 min before it ended....

Lessons learned.

Yeah, it really is 'Caveat Emptor', senoBDEC, maybe our reporting here will stop one person from the same mistake. No reply from the vendor - I am about to give him his 'due' feedback-wise.

Here is a proper 'Brand New Kershaw 1725CB' and what this guy sent me:

Oops - forgot to get the Kershaw sheet from the box... nothing whatsoever in the padded bag but some bubblewrap and the knife, of course. Here is a close-up of the blem/factory second/refurb/reject/whatever - no problem found, save the x's. I actually like the grey patterned JYDII better - another pouch would have been nice, of course.
Both are dated Oct 08.

Be careful - Happy New Year!

Stainz, start a thread in The Good, Bad & Ugly giving the name of the ebay dealer and the details about his misleading ad. At the very least, maybe you can keep this from happening to another member here...

btw, I like the grey JYD pattern too!

I bought an XXXX MUDD from Kershawguy (Dave) and I have looked the
knife over and over and for the life of me, I can't figure out how it didn't
pass Kershaws QC. The grind is as near perfect as possible and there isn't
any kind of cosmetic or mechanical blem that I can see that would warrant
the XXXX on the blade.

I cant find a single thing wrong with my XXXX ZT0200 either. It is, in my appraisal, 100% perfect. No complaints!
