What flipper's action suprised you for the price? For better or worse...

After hearing a lot about how bad the Spyderco Positron's action is, I was surprised to find that it was actually pretty decent. That's not to say it's fantastic; it could use a better detent, and occasionally fails to fire all the way to lock ... but it moves very smothly. Just a great pivot feel.

In contrast, while the Southard has a strong detent and I really have to try to get it to not fire properly, it just feels gritty and frictiony. While I'd rather have a knife that works right and feels meh than one that feels great and doesn't work, is it too much to ask to get both pieces right on a $200+ knife?

All the ZT's I've had are amazing flippers, especially my 0392BLK and new 0609. To be honest, that doesn't surprise me anymore. ZT is just killing it in terms of consistency between models.

One that has surprised me, however, is the Steel Will Modus in frn. A medium-sized knife with an unassuming blade shape, the action is dialed in very nicely. I dig the phosphor bronze washers.

ETA: This thread needs more pics!

I'm looking really hard at that exact knife. I need a flipper in my life, I love the blade shape and D2 steel for under $60.
Pretty sure this is what the wife will be getting me for father's day this year!

Sweet! I'm sure you're gonna dig it! I'm really happy with it and I paid $35 here on the exchange!

These three pleasantly surprised me at the time I owned them (all are now gone LOL)...all were fantastic flippers with fall closed/drop shut action!

The grimsmo norseman. A friend of mine was lucky enough to win the lottery and wow........never felt something so smooth. Not even my safe queen is that smooth

zt 0450 in my op is the best flipping knife (non assisted) i have ever used ....period

I just received the Freeman 451 and it is easily by far my smoothest flipping knife I now have. It is also the sharpest knife I’ve ever received. I don’t need to break out the sharpener for this one. My ZT 0393 is now in second place. I can’t believe the action this knife has.

I've got lots of great flippers, but most were not surprisingly good considering their cost. For the money--around 80 bucks--the Kizer Vanguard Intrepid, Laconico design is an absolutely amazing, fool-proof, and wicked fast flpper. I can't find a stand-alone pic, so here it is with my Superleaf.

I'm in love with my ZT's. I would say they are probably the most consistent and repeatable from knife to knife. At least of the ones that I have handled multiples of any one model. No need to list them as pretty much all of mine are spectacular.

But my most flipped knife is my Kizer Ki3452. More thousands than I can count. Mine is the bronze on the right.

I've seen a few people mention the Massdrop Gent as amazing flippers. I would call mine simply adequate. I think the blade is too light to be really good. But my MD Falcon and Crux are definitely above par.

One of my more recent surprises is the WE Eschaton. It's throwing a long blade with a tiny little flipper tab. Mine is surprisingly consistent and satisfying. It's the one at the bottom of this pic.

Surprised by bad action
- Kizer Begleiter.

I just bought this cause I liked the looks of the blue one with the uncoated blade. I hate this thing. Keep thinking of just throwning it away but I haven't. I've taken it apart, polished the insides, polished the detent and lightened it up a bit and it still just sucks.

Agreed. It is a combination of the teflon/bronze washers and that coated blade. I tore mine down because it has a hitch in it when opening or closing the blade. Very disappointing action.

It's a shame cause I love the size of the knife and the feel of it but the action just sucks. I've tried removing the plastic washers, polishing everything, etc. I think most of my issues are the detent which I even polished a bit.

Just ordered one of those wood handled, polished blade, Boker Kwaikens to try to replace this thing. Was hoping the size and feel is similar, just with a better action.

The Ruike p108. Best flipping action I've had. With the ballbearing pivot and the strong detent it has the blade just flies out.

ZT0777 was a pleasant surprise
Bodega field grade was incredible and in first place with my Shiro Hati
