What folder would you get if you had 300-500 to spend?

A few choices:

- If they are within your budget, do check out Rockstead. A small japanese semi-custom brand with impeccable finish and amazing blades using a rare Hitachi blade material with 64HRC. There is a video of the CEO cutting an enormous amount of rope with a Rockstead without sharpening.

- a nice custom has a more personal feel - check them out at a knife trade fair so you know fit & finish

- and, really thinking out of the box, a $100 knife and with the $400 change take wifey for a nice romantic weekend trip !

What part of "Jill Jackson" screams MAN to everyone? :p

Oops! Actually I read the post but as a non-natively English speaking person I glanced over the obvious!

Anyway, my 3rd, "out of the box" suggestion still stands: a $100 knife + a $400 weekend trip.

That's a nice suggestion, but I have probably 70, 100 dollar plus or minus a bit knives already. I want one that's a little more in all aspects than all the others.

How about a getting a true, built to specs custom? Are you sure you want a productionesque folder?

I started out when I asked on this thread wanting a Umnumzaan and I wanted to see if anybody came up with anything I liked better.
I still want the Umnumzaan, so that's probably what it's going to be. Like some have stated, it's not hard to sell if I want to later at little or no loss, if I don't like it.
So, it's going to be a week or so before my funds are released to spend and I will still be "studying" on the matter, in the week ahead.
Very good ideas are posted here. Some like the slip joints I'd never consider, as my Dad has collected those for decades and I like the big locking folders and he doesn't. But all are wonderful choices and lets us see every-one's taste in this price range. So, it's an interesting read.

Perhaps one of these two:

Top: Klotzli Walker 05, bottom Klotzli Walker 03.
These knives are very smooth indeed. Pretty rare yet as precisely and quality-oriented made as a CRK but with a different focus, and to my taste better looking. Both available from the UK site Heinnie (actually the 03 is out of production, but an even nicer variant with red bone inlay is still available there).
I have the 05 model. Very nice indeed. Impeccable fit & finish is comparable to top customs.

As some wise soul told me several months ago when I was asking for help while considering some expensive, for me, knives: "You know what you want and shouldn't need any help in spending your money!". Hmmm, that was you, J.J.! I ended up with the BM 630 & 635, by the way... and a big wow for both!!

Okay, no comments on the big buck Gold BM. Go with the obvious - a computer graphic or inlaid C R Large Sebenza. Another choice... I love Buck 110s and have a few from their 'Custom Shop' versions, including some with BG-42 blades. One has NS bolsters, flaming koa wood scales, and a teardrop Damascus blade. They are made to your order - S30V blade ($18.50 surcharge) - sambar stag ($144 surcharge) or Paua ($470 surcharge) handles are available. Yeah, they won't do anything a $27 WallyWorld bought 110 wouldn't do, but they do it with style. It's nice ordering something 'specially made' for you. Just a thought. Let us know what you get...
