What folder would you guys take on a hike?

I get out in the woods as often as I can. As long as I have a sharp slip joint in my pocket, just about any flavor, I'm happy. I am, however, known to carry a few more knives. Just because I can.

probably by easy open boys knife, considering i can't seem to extricate it from my pocket for more than a few hours. I would also have a fixed blade hanging off my belt.

I know its not ideal but was just curious if you didnt have the option of a fixed blade what traditional would you take on a week long camping trip? I just got back from just a trip and carried nothing but my old Buck 301. It did a fine job all week! What would you guys grab?

P.S. I did have a cut off rough stuff machete and a small hatchet for kindling :D

To be honest I fail to find a use for a fixed blade if I have a machete or a hatchet along. To me a fixed blade is a lightweight log splitter. That being said I feel just fine carrying just my SAK electrician on most of my hikes. I carry other blades because I like to, not because I "need" them. ;)

(That's me above the sign to the right; I did not STOP, either. :D)

Great pictures! Looks like your front porch is on t'other side of the mountain.

You're right! Didn't click through!!! Now I see it. The Jewell!! I would like to think I would have recognized the ridge if you had captured the smoke from the Cog Railway!!

True story (proud papa moment). This spring my daughter pounded the table at dinner and demanded that we climb Mt. Washington. What's a dad to do? For starters, I got her a Wegner (and my son an Opinel of his own)!! But then she demanded another trip where we could stay up high for multiple nights. Her wish is my command, I guess.

Great shots right back at you. Lucky people we are.

I'm not too picky on what to carry when I'm hiking. I would rather carry a small fixed blade but as far as folders go I probably lean more towards a stockman just because I enjoy using that for doing some whittling to pass the time.

For camping, if I couldn't have a fixed blade, I would probably use a peasant knife. That thing is a real work horse.

SARAH.....(off topic)...I notice that you wear Blue clothing and know its your favorite colour..In our NZ bush, blue is the safest colour to wear..The downside is it attracts our native bees and wasps..Be safe be seen,or be STUNG!!..... I have done the half mile madman dash with flailing arms exercise.......I wear green..................................FES

On a hike (no over night or hunting) I feel just fine w/ my case trapper or GEC #53. Hunting bumps me up to a 110 paired w/ my trapper. Camping brings in my BRKT Aurora (paired again w/ my trapper) for fire wood prep.

There are times I think all I need is my trapper, but I've never tried to process a deer w/ one, always had the 110 handy.

Man I miss NH and the White Mountains! BTW that is Mt Washington! Any snow still in Tuckerman's?
For me I am always partial to some kind of SAK, mostly a Farmer these days.

As the title says 'folder' I feel any Traditional would be a welcome companion, an old pocket friend etc. Can't really go wrong as it's so pleasing to carry a beautiful knife in any context.

My particular vote would go to a GEC 73 liner lock. Why? Good size not too bulky or dinky, and yes I do like a lock if the blade gets stuck in something, might be in the minority but I don't mind.

Only one?? :D For me a Vic Farmer would probably do the job in most cases.
But my Trapper is simply more fun and has a very solid feel to it :)

I think I'd carry either a 2 blade GEC #73 if only 1 knife, if more than one then probably a #23LL and a smaller knife like a #48.

Thanks, FES, but no worries-- I'm too fast for 'em. Here my speed is such that I'm reduced to a blur:

[Knife content: the TC Barlow was in my pocket, but somewhere in said Blur I also had my Strix affixed to the belt of my pack. OP, I know you've specified folder, but were I to be camping for a week (perish the thought), a small fixed blade would more readily hit the spot.]

For a hike, I enjoy my Case SwayBack Jack.
Camping for a week with just folders? I'd add the Vic SAK Farmer for sure.
