What guns do you like to hunt with?

My Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in .270. Killed a mess of deer with it. Glass bed stock and a lightened trigger. Dont even need to replace the barrel, the stock one is very accurate.

Also my Browning High Wall .45-70 or 7mm Mag. I love the .47-70 caliber, it packs a womp, is easy to reload for and the old feel of these rifles is great, I did put scopes on them but I dont feel it ruins the fun of carrying it with me. Both have taken deer. Though the old .45-70 makes a hell of a hole on woodchucks (what I was carrying at the time)

Please excuse the feet:

I also LOVE my .45 lever. Its light, quick, easy handeling and little recoil. With my handloads I am comfortable at 200yrds with it (bust a ton a clay birds at that distance) and its just fun to shoot and carry. (no pics of the precious)

Almost forgot my other Precious, my Winchester 1300 Pump in laminated stock and engraving. LOVE this shotgun, have chokes for turkey and killed everything from squirrels on up with it. I use an 11-87 with Canta-lever barrel for Deer here in MD but it isnt used nearly as much as my 1300.

Deer: Marlin 336 in .30-30 or a Remington 700 in .308.

Turkey: Remington 870.

Dove: Remington 1100.

nice air pistol, hows it do on small game?

This is the .177 model. It will work fine on birds. You would probably need to get real close for a rabbit or squirrel. Crosman used to sell a .22 version. You can still buy the parts and mod it yourself or buy one from the various on-line vendors. If I understand correctly, a modded .22 version will drop a squirrel or rabbit at a reasonable distance, say 20 yards.

I do not hunt, however, it is an important survival skill. I practice with this a lot and I am saving for a modded .22. I made a "Varmint Al" bipod which fits in my pack with my 1377. It is amazingly accurate.

I've killed more animals with my Benelli Montefeltro than any other gun I own, no contest. It's also the one I enjoy shooting the most. Here's a picture of a Thanksgiving morning hunt a few years ago:

My other favorite hunting gun is my Marlin .30-30. Great gun, puts deer down fine. I topped it with a 1.5-4.5x Bushnell scope last winter, and that seems to be a killer combo. Haven't had the opportunity to hunt anything with it that way yet, though. No pictures of the Marlin, unfortunately.

Pre-War Winchester 94 in .32 Win. Special, 1720's repro I Wilson trade gun,.62 cal flinter smoothbore.

I REALLY miss my Marlin 1895 -- but I needed the money at the time.

So, my choice right now (that has never let me down) is this beaut:

Ruger M77 in .270 with a 3x9 Leopold. 37 years and 116 deer. No way to convince me there is any better rig anywhere.

barrabas74,

I likewise have a 45-70 Hi Wall. I'm about to put a Marbles flip-up aperture sight on it. I have no problem with scoping one but I have other scoped rifles and like to hunt this one traditional style.

One time at the range I was shooting some 100 yd targets with the standard open sights. I had two rounds left and asked one of my buddies, who is a competitive match shooter in several rifle disciplines, if he wanted to try the Hi Wall. When I later looked through the spotting scope, I saw two holes in the black that were overlapping. Wish I'd had another few rounds for him to shoot because even though I shoot pretty well with it, I've never done anything like that.

I hunt with a 20 gauge Ithaka Deer Slayer. Model 37, that is.

If you want my prefered rifle, winchester .30-.30.

I have a bunch of hunting rifles but always seem to grab my old Browning BAR in .270.

Other favorites are a Winchester Model 70 in .300 Win Mag, a Winchester Model 94 in 30-30, a Thompson/Center Contender pistol with 10" 30-30 barrel, AR-15 in 6.8 SPC, a Ruger Mini-30 (7.62x39) and a CZ 550 American in 9.3x62.

My all-time favorite duck gun is a Beretta 390 12ga. and my favorite grouse guns are a Beretta S686 Silver Special O/U 12ga. or a Beretta 391 20ga..

Stay sharp,

Most of my hunting is small game this what I carry most of the time
N.E.F. youth 28 ga. with synthetic stock and a "survivor" fore arm
I have a hand loaded round ball slug worked up that is minute of coyote@ 50-60 yards
For a big game rifle I have a H&R handi rifle in 45-70 when I bought it I wanted a nicer rifle. but now that I can afford something nicer . I ain't found anything that will out class it in a big slow cal. at 5 times the price sure I can find prettier guns. but it put 3 of them big bullets touching at 100 yards it is light fast handling and Hammers deer like they were hit with a mack truck.

I used to shoot competitive rifle (F Class) among other things. The Browning that I own is very capable of what your friend did. I handload for all my rifles and with the right loads that .45-70 shoots well (keepin in mind its an old military cartridge). Problem is the bullets are so heavy you experience major drop out at longer distances. For longer shots I have the 7mm Mag in that model. Now i have never shot it with Open sights. I was thinking about getting an aperture sight for the .45-70 just because I usually take shots within 200 yards with it.

I've taken the Browning on an elk hunt but didn't get a shot the day I was carrying it. I also have a Shiloh Sharps Long Range Express (34" barrel) with the vernier sight. Someday I'd like to take some game with it ---but not too far from the truck (HEAVY!).:D

The problem with installing an aperture sight on the 1885 is that mine has no tang so you have to use the model that mounts to the stock. [I don't want to have a gunsmith add a tang.] I don't think it will be a problem so long as you check the zero before each hunt.

Small game rimfire: I prefer my old stevens single shot to my 10/22. haven't warmed up yet to the 10/22 trigger.

Shotguns: I prefer my single shot 69 dollar italian folder than my 870 for most woodswalking. Turkey, and waterfowl I take the 870. Also deer if I have to.

Deer: Remington 700 in 30-06 with a perfect one shot drop record so far.
