What happened to the Taiwanese Beckers?

From what I have seen, the 9 is probably the best chopper on the market when you take into account it's weight of (I think) 18oz. It hangs right in there with the big boys that have 10oz or more on it. The 4 is just so dang sexy though.....

The BK-9 is only 1.05 pounds according to the Kabar website.

You obviously are not familiar with the quality of Kabars Tawian made products.

Im a bigger fan of their overseas factory than I am of the American 1095CV

I have touched them at some knife shows, but own none. I do not like the Ka-Bars USMC knives just the Ka-Bar Beckers. Too many great USA big fixed blades to own for me. My China/Taiwan knives that I do own are now just truck knives and give aways.:barf: The great thing is we all get to vote with our own money.:D

when the main branch company watches their "contractors" (regardless of location) so closely, like apple monitors various chinese assembly plants of iphones/ipads/etc... those companies might as well be on usa soil, and so on.

Taiwan made KaBar products are VERY good. they're usually perfect actually. more CNC, automation/etc... Beckers in the USA by contrast are hand finished. sometimes you get perfection (a lot), and sometimes you don't. oh well. fix it, return it, or ... well. there you are.

It seems to me like I can put the steel through more hell as well

I'm not aware of any of the becker line being made overseas (except a version of the BK13 that was included with the fullsize knives for a time) but the other knives that Ka-Bar has made in Taiwan have been every bit as good as the US stuff.

I agree. If you look at other Ka-bar offerings from Taiwan (the Dozier Folding Hunter comes to mind), then there's nothing not to like about the building quality of said knives. I understand though that some people prefer knives to be made in their home country...

Y'all should read the ask tooj section of the KA-bar forum. Reinheart doesn't sound like a sure thing and in a thread a little while back ethan hinted that something "completely new" would be coming out. Hope I'm wrong on the reinheart and who knows what's really gonna happen but we probably won't see anything for a long time a year plus at least. Save up for those secondhand BK1's!!

I too would like to get my Hands on a Reinhardt Kukri but i am not looking forward to the Cordura/leather crapfest that Kabar is likely to provide it in...

I hope they think up some new sheathing method or provide the option buy/sell without sheath

Last I heard it was looking like 2015 for the RBK but was very likely to happen. What I gathered was everything was in the works and going smoothly but they still had to dot the 'i's and cross the T's with the Reinheart estate. The plan is to make it .25" thick and it sounded like they had already done some prototyping and tested it. All of this is unsubstantiated of course but what I gathered from the ask toooj and other threads.

Agreed. I'd like to see kydex. Not fiberglass reinforced nylon but kydex. But it'll probably be a lame throw-away like the rest of them.

I've heard Ethan say that they do this to keep the whole package affordable, and the knives US made. I doubt anyone would choose not to buy an RBK because it came with a throwaway "crapfest"....I think that while not the highest quality, the current BK&T sheaths are perfectly serviceable, and a substantially better option than no sheath at all...*cough*

Im imagining that the sheath wouldn't be comparable to the BK&T line at all but those of the 1217 Fighter and some from the heavy chopper line.

Yes, I like the Becker pocket sheaths, even then it rots in my closet do to reasons other than quality; its just too bulky where it doesnt need to be but mine is an old style and not the new sleek ones.

The only flaw I've ever found is that I've come to prefer a hard scabbard to a soft sheath as living in Southeast Louisiana, I have a tendency to get the material wet/rained on which keep my carbon blade wet/sticky/humid for many hours after.

I've never touched kydex and don't have single problem with kabars glass reinforced nylon

Though i do Wish my BK2 sheath had a dern thumbramp, I've been given the option to trade in

My point being, you'd still purchase an RBK, even if it came with a vinyl POS for a sheath.
I know they're economical, but id rather not have them factored into my price at all!

The Becker clique is "moddy", we should be allowed to purchase blanks ;) who needs scales??

This. If I have to choose between a sheath I can't use or a few buck off the price, I'd rather have one without the sheath. I have to get a new sheath immediately anyway.

I don't mind the new sheaths, they seem to hold up well. However if I could buy just the knife without a sheath for 10-15$ less then I definitely would! I do wish they would offer this, similiar to what ESEE does for the Junglas. But I think knife people just like to modify things, sheaths included. If the beckers came with kydex, we would all want custom Godspeed kydex or leather/kydex hybrids or something crazy.
