What happens to those "lost" knives?

I have lost knives and had knives stolen, but I mostly misplace knives which later turn up when I am not expecting them to.

I rented a furnished house once. I found about a half dozen Case slip joints inside a drawer. I am sure those were "lost knives". Come to think about it... I still have those, but if you asked me to lay my hands on them quickly, I couldn't. Guess they are "lost again".

I have found a number of knives out in the woods. The previous owners probably lost them the same way I do, you use the knife and set it down and you walk away or you can't find it once you set it down. It happens.

I keep most of my knives in a large box. It used to be a book carton (moving box), but I have since shifted to rubber maid tubs. These knives are generally in the factory box and mostly unused or barely used. There are $20 knives inside, $50 knives, $100 knives, and $500 knives in that box. For the most part, if they are inside that tub, I can find them, but those Case slip joints are somewhere else stored and remain "lost".

You talk about lost knives. Heck. I lose guns for months at a time and sometimes years....

I've actually had a Swiss Army Knife disappear for a spell, and then return to the exact spot I remembered leaving it. Maddening to say the least.

My father had a saying to explain such events - "When the Devil's finished with it, he'll bring it back." You might enjoy this article of mine that tells that tale, and one extra. It's called Now You See It, Now You Don't.

I've lost a few knives but I found plenty of knives. I find them everywhere. By the lakeside, parking lots, on the trail, etc.etc. Butchers, hunters, fighting, SAC's, lock backs folders, antique, homemade, etc, etc.

The most memorable was under a giant old growth Ponderosa Pine in a backcountry wilderness camp spot. I was sitting under that tree drinking coffee and noticed the pine needle blanket beneath me was about 5 inches deep. I also noticed with my knees up, stuff was wanting to fall out of my front pockets. I started digging around under the pine needles and pulled out a nice double bladed Boker. Not a spec of rust because the ground under that old tree hadn't seen moisture in decades. To think somebody lost their knife sitting in that exact spot kinda blew me away and made my day.

the only knives i've found were never anything worth keeping. I did manage to find a few blades from my mothers dead husband this last Christmas I was there. a Schrade and a Camillus. Thankfully I've found every knife so far that I have misplaced. the socks I've written off.........

Come to think of it, I have actually one a blade. It was an old Condor machete that someone left in a field. I noticed an odd orange and black thing on the ground, and I pulled on it. Couldn't believe my eyes when an 18" blade followed it! :D

All of those lost knives? Easy...my wife has 'em.

I used to always lose one of my handguns, and I would blame everyone from terrorists to obama for stealing my guns. Then my wife would find it for me...right where I had put it. Never failed. I finally learned to be much less paranoid, and now I just ask my wife to find my ....... for me, and she does.
I would imagine she has a large stash of knives around here somewhere that belongs to you guys. I'll have to ask her about it.

I once lost a protech sprint auto when I was drunk and peeing outside in the sideyard during a snow storm. Found it 2 years later though pretty much shot.

I can't remember ever finding a knife and the only knife I ever lost (permanently) was a huge Vic camper type SAK my Dad gave me when I was about 9. I don't think I had that knife for more than a month or so :(. I do tend to lose track of my beers after having three or four :D

I never found any of the knives that I lost. But I did find a Gerber 06 once. A couple of my buddies pounced on it first though. Were were just out in a clearing in the woods, probably a mile from a logging road in the okanogan wenatchee national forest outside of Cle Elum WA. The worst part is that neither of my buddies even carried a knife.

Never lost one!

Now of course this knife gnome is going to come visit me in the middle of the night
That is fine and good

i will just lay out some booby traps for him if i might
and catch him where he stood

he and i will drink until i say it's alright
then he will give me that bucketful of Hinderers lost less i spill his blood!!

. Muhaha HAHAAAAAA. :D

Great post! I have never found a knife, but I have lost. Biggest loss is my small sebenza. I think about it sometimes, I hope it got found by someone who appreciates it.

I lost my benchmade elishewitz 910 for at least two years, found it one day in my kayak life vest that was only worn once...a little rusty.... but back in service again. P.S look in that old jacket pocket or pants pocket that could have been stored somewhere deep in the closet or in a plastic box.

Years ago my wife got me a passle of magazine subscriptions for a Christmas or sumpin'.

We moved from our apartment to another and in the rush I forgot to notify all the magazines. Every one of those mags found their way to our new address, I'm assuming as a result of the new tenants putting them back in the mailbox with a "no longer at this address" written on them...

except for Playboy.

That's why lost knives don't make their way home much, 'cause they're neat.

I also think "lost" knives are sometimes just set down out of the owners sight for too long.

The only decent knife I've lost for good, I know where I lost it exactly but can't get it back. In a customer's car :( I was hoping the kind customer would find it and bring it back, but it never happened. I guess when you find a pocket knife on your seat that's nicer than any knife you've owned, you're not likely to bring it back. It was my Case Swayback Jack, still miss it when I get a hankering to whittle.

Other's I often find in cars I have neglected to clean for awhile. Or bedrooms I have neglected to clean for awhile... :P Hell, I found my birth certificate in a car I hadn't driven in 2 years recently.

Most of the knives I have lost over the years were due to carrying a knife loose in my pants pocket – especially if my pants were dress pants. Dress pants do not hold the knife tight enough and when I would sit down, the knife would come out. I have found knives on the couch before in my house. However, I recently found a large Cold Steel Bowie-type knife on a day hike. I have never lost a knife with a clip.

Only knife I've ever lost was a Spyderco Police (aluminum handles) that near as I can figure slipped out of my pocket on a city bus in Bakersfield (can't figure it out consudering it stayed with me when I laid my motorcycle down). Two years ago, found a small three blade Buck under my bike after I came back to it from work.
If the Knife gnome is trying to make up for my Spyderco, he sucks...
