Unfortunately I believe that the people who find the knives are people who do not appreciate the knife as much as the one who lost it. =( I imagine dirty sticky foulmouthed children finding my lost knives and throwing them at trees, laughing, until they break. Or maybe such is not the case! I have actually found many knives throughout my life, usually whilst walking in the woods or down a path, and I can tell you that when I find a knife, I am overjoyed. =) I am happier than when I find money on the ground, although I do feel bad for the person who lost the knife. Perhaps you can rest easy and believe that wherever your knife is, the new owner is taking care of it, and using it in the ways nature intended.
*EDIT*
ACTUALLY, I do have a story. About 6 months ago, I was at my friend's parents house. I was in the driveway and happened to look down the side of the retaining wall. I saw what looked like the outline of a knife beneath some pine needles. I investigated and to my surprise it was a cheapo made-in-china butterfly knife that I myself had lost back when i was 14 or 15... I was shocked. It actually wasn't too rusted, but I believe it broke after 2 or 3 days of playing with it... Point is, I refound a long lost knife more than 8 years after I lost it!
