What happens when.......

What about the internet? Will it not help with exposure?

I'm pretty sure it's going to last longer than any movie or TV show.....

People who watch the show, may come to the internet for more info?

Collectibles are a hobby that depends on the long term interest of people who enjoy the particular medium for its long term viability

When market forces are distorted by the spending habits of a very small number (i.e. Walker knives) or by people who are in it only to make a quick buck, history shows that that particular collectible market will suffer and decline.

The quality of knives continues to improve although there are some odd trends, particularly the clunky, expensive tacticals that seem to be in vogue.

The internet is like the local dump, everything and anything is there, misinformation, good information, irrelevant information, it's all there you just need to filter out the information (that by itself is an art form ;) )

Tv on the other hand is like the menu board at the fast food drive thru, everybody wants what they(marketing dept) make look the best. These guys are masters of persuasion by the time they're finished with a 45 minute what amounts to a commercial the mindless masses are googling katar and looking to see if Amazon prime offers free 2 day shipping.

Me myself, I'm a glutton for punishment and will watch any show tied to a knife but as a longtime collector/user I feel obligated to watch show like FiF so I can have an intelligent discussion on knives, any aspect of knives including public perception based on media's manipulation of what a knife is, (weapon, tool, art).

I'm in this for the rest of my life, it's not a fad our trend for me so I'd like to think I'm not alone in how I feel and with that would like to believe after all the hoopla is over the community as a whole week be a much better place.

The past is just a memory and the future does not exist. What is there to worry about?

Don... I love your work. I gotta ask what is the relevance of this quote to the discussion? I assume the point is that you believe living in the present is what is most important.

The present certainly affects the future present... As do past experiences (what you would call memories).

Worry not but certainly you factor in your memories in how you deal with your "present". Again... Not sure how this quote has any relevance as it pertains to the concept of a craft becoming diluted as a result of mainstream popularity

I was always interested in knives, started collecting customs in 1979-ish.
Before the internet (1992-ish for me) the only way to find out about knives was through books, magazines and shows.
I have every Knife Digest from 1980 to the late 90's and 100's of magazines.

Now TV and the internet have created mega-exposure. There will always be multiple category's of buyers (collectors).

Do you think knife making will go the way of motorcycle builders?
Similar situation. Mega exposure on TV drives the market, then an economic bust/crunch, chopper bike makers go belly up.

Adam, the way I read what Steven opened this thread with was; We should worry about the future because of something that happened in the past. I don't live that way and do tend to focus on the "present". I do not believe one or a few knife shows on TV will hurt the custom knife world at all. That's all. Thanks for asking.
