I have become obsessed with folding pocket knives. So much so that I have bought a CRK Small Sebenza, a Spyderco Native, and a Dragonfly. Now I am thinking about a large Sebenza! It all started about 2 months ago when my son joined Boy Scouts. I decided to buy him a pocket knife and I started doing some research on Spyderco because I bought an Endura Clip-It back in the early 90s that I've used as a "camping" knife and I still have and love (I ended up getting him a Byrd Robin 2). That led me to YouTube videos which I have been watching daily. My wife thinks there is something wrong with me. I think there is something wrong with me. Now I have found this forum and I am now reading all this stuff. Like I said, I have become obsessed and I am now carrying the small Sebenza with me everywhere I go and writing this post during work hours...

Looking for a cure...

A cure? You came to wrong place for that. :) Welcome.

Dude (op) With all due respect, if you compare knives to crack, you've come to the crack factory/drug dealers joint hoping to get over your crack addiction :D

Just messing, Welcome :D

re: the wife.
start working on the 'trading' angle, as in you're thinking about trading a couple knives for some other ones you like the looks of, to be able to responsibly find the ones you really like and want to keep. that way she gets that there's going to be knives coming and going, and it's ok.

just don't tell her that what you're trading is your cash for their knives.

'where did you get THAT knife?'
'i traded for it'.

see, sounds perfectly reasonable.

(learned this from another BF member - real life saver)

I don't understand. Sounds like you only own like 4 or 5 knives. That *is* a problem, just not in the way I think you think we might think it is. Yeah.

Dude, I am right there with you. My obsessions started at xmas with my brother in law broke out his SOG to open a christmas present....then I bought a SOG, then a Benchmade, then another, then a ZT, then a few more, the an Umnumzaan, and now looking into customs. My wife thinks I am crazy too...but there are a whole lot worse things I could be doing or spending money on.

Have fun!

This knife hobby helped me with getting over with some past addictions. Hello, my name is Dalton, and I'm a knifeaholic.

Like stated earlier; buy some, feel them out, then trade them for others to try, and repeat. I have found about 5 I can't do without. Now I only buy new ones on special occasions.

You should try the classics. I recommend the Spyderco Military and Delica, my current EDC.

Run now…. Once you’re in you’re in. After awhile you’ll start thinking carrying customs is normal like me if you aren’t careful :)

Oh, I see the problem, its the wife! Here is what I do; keep a running total on all her personal expenses, nail spas, maid, shoes (oh God, the shoes), a new bottle of wine she picked up for herself to try, anything at all that she may spend extra cash on - then come up with an annual total and spend what you like on blades but do not exceed her total. Also, dont advetise this to her unless you absolutly have to, always try using lame excuses and answers first, many times they will work. I had a large collection of knives and guns before I met my wife so just saying ”oh ive had this one for years” has paid off for me many times.

I'm just reading these replies and laughing out loud. I really like the "I traded for it" line and the "oh, that's an old one" suggestion. Will probably find it handy in the future. Looks like I'm not getting cured anytime soon from the advice I'm getting here... I know nothing about other knife manufacturers and custom knives. I just know what shapes and designs look attractive to me so there is much to learn which is why I am so obsessed. I went through similar issues with salt water reef tanks, high end stereo equipment, guitars, and now this. I know why my wife is concerned. I am too! Now, where can I find a knife show nearby? I live just outside of Portland, OR. Thanks for your support fellas!

Thanks! I have been eyeing the Paramilitary 2 actually. Looks really nice. The Delica looks really nice too and is calling me. I have a new appreciation for my original Endura Clip-it now. I just sent it back to Spyderco for a little spa treatment. It has served me faithfully for over 17 years and that includes 2 tough years in the bush in Papua New Guinea when I was doing some medical research there. Gotta love Spyderco's free sharpening for life policy...

The "I traded for it" works really well with the budget conscious lady. It works really well when you trade one knife and get two in return!

If you're worried about the cash you're spending, spend more time in the trading forums.
Trading is how I've gotten where I am in the knife world.
Folding knives are my weakness.
But this means ANY knife that folds....
Slip joints...
Traditionals...
Balisongs...
Swiss Army Knives...
Multi-Tools...
Modern Manual Folders
Gentleman's folders
Spring assisted folders
Flippers
Autos
You name it...
If it folds, I like it.

I have a total of 40 knives.

That's not a lot... but I started out with maybe 2 name brand knives.

Now I have some higher end knives, some mid-end knives, limited editions, discontinued knives, hard to find knives, I just love knives.

Though ... I didn't come here to solve my problem. I came here to be around more people who had the same problem lol.

Anyways, welcome to the forums. But the "problem" will only get worse lol. But I would try trading some of the knives you do have for other knives you find interest in. And you could find knives that maybe your wife would like and you can share the hobby.
But, keep it at being a hobby. You don't want to go bankrupt over knives.

By the way my name is Jessie, and I'm a knifeaholic.

Well, this is still a less expensive hobby than firearms! I got into that last years and believe me, its addicting for sure, you cant have just one gun.
