What has happened to me?

I didn't think I had a problem, until I bought a Kukri and found myself drooling over pictures of them all over the web. Then I went and counted my knives and realized I had 22 of them.

Now I freely admit to having OCOKD - Obsessive Collecting of Knives Disorder.

Welcome to the club. :D

Oh man the condition is highly contagious and Im not aware of a cure.... Well welcome to the club. Don't worry about it there are many a things that are a lot worse.

i'm the laughing stock at the spyderco column for suggesting i'd be satisfied with 2 spydeys. one said 52 is more like it.

OMG...I have it really bad. I obsessed all day and in the end I decided it's better for me to just buy the ZT 560 instead of obsessing over it and neglecting my work. So I bought one from an EBay seller. 14 day return policy made me feel a little better.... This is a serious affliction. I am not kidding...

Before you buy, check with Kershaw Guy.
He often has good deals for Kewshaw and ZT knives

I have become obsessed with folding pocket knives. So much so that I have bought a CRK Small Sebenza, a Spyderco Native, and a Dragonfly. Now I am thinking about a large Sebenza! It all started about 2 months ago when my son joined Boy Scouts. I decided to buy him a pocket knife and I started doing some research on Spyderco because I bought an Endura Clip-It back in the early 90s that I've used as a "camping" knife and I still have and love (I ended up getting him a Byrd Robin 2). That led me to YouTube videos which I have been watching daily. My wife thinks there is something wrong with me. I think there is something wrong with me. Now I have found this forum and I am now reading all this stuff. Like I said, I have become obsessed and I am now carrying the small Sebenza with me everywhere I go and writing this post during work hours...

Looking for a cure...

What you just found is pure and un-cut... Welcome to the disease.

Well, the bad news is, you are screwed. It's a disease that only grows and grows. One piece of advice I can give is that trading is a great way to "refine" your collection. Once you have bought many different types/styles of knives and have figured out what sort of features, size, steel etc. you prefer, you can trade off a couple of those lesser value knives for a higher-end piece with more (or all) of the features you like. It's also a great way to just try things out without breaking the bank. If I bought every knife I've owned, man, I'd be in some serious _____. :D

Thanks for the excellent advice! At this point I have only 5 knives (including the ZT 560 that's in the mail). Is it possible to remain steady there? We shall see because I feel like I have all my bases covered right now. Large fixed blade (SOG), small pocket (Small Sebenza) for jeans, large pocket (ZT560) just because it's incredibly cool, and 2 general purpose small (Spyderco native and dragonfly) for light shorts. It's the incredibly cool category that I realize now, has me worried. There's just no functional justification for that category other than just subjective coolness. Same problem I have with my guitars...

It is possible to stay at 5 pieces but it is difficult. If you have the self discipline, it's easy but there will inevitably be some knives that you "just have to have". I have a few knives I carry but I have a collection that I own just because I like them.

Whatever you do, never go on a quest to find a current production knife that meets some imaginary standard you have because of a knife you bought thirty years ago that's now out of production and the company that made it is now making junk.

You will discover that stores will not lend you knives to test. They have this weird idea that you should buy them if you want to try them.

And then you might "cleverly" start buying random cheap pieces off of [some auction site] so that you keep costs down while you're doing research.

And then, once you figure out what you like, and get an appreciation for things like types of steel, types of grind, blade shapes & profiles, handle patterns, and variations on a theme, you'll start noticing pieces that completely escaped your attention before, and you'll have to pick up some of those to test as well.

And then you'll find that your tastes and knowledge have achieved a whole new plane of awareness, and you'll be compelled to act in confirmation of this new awareness and pick up pieces that are fitting for a man of (newly) refined tastes.

Somewhere in a closet in an obscure part of your home, an accumulation of toolboxes, filled with nothing but knives, will begin to grow, and your spouse may begin to wonder about this quest and where it will ultimately lead.

Ultimately lead?

Well, unhappily, I can't help you with that.

I haven't found out yet.

Yep, every time I buy a knife, I say it is my last one. Then I start looking for my next one before the new one arrives! I just bought two Buck Frontiersman knives, one to use hunting and one to look at. I have a Fox on the way as we speak.

Been doing this since I was 13 and am now 44. First my great grandfather, then grandfather, now me.

It is total obsession!!

It's the weirdest feeling....this feeling of knowing that I am hearing the truth...a dawning realization that I'm helpless in the face of this new addiction, dreading where it will lead me, and yet going so willingly...I don't have a substance abuse problem. Never did drugs and I don't get along with alcohol (makes me feel like crap)...but I think I have an addictive personality.
