what has your addiction cost you?

the other day I was looking over my personal spending ledger. a loose compilation I keep of my spending and income (just to keep track of things.) and I was surprised to see my knife addiction hasn't been detrimental to my bank account. looking back I realized this is because about the same time I started getting serious about knives was the same time I stopped playing video games. The $40-$70 I spent monthly on the newest games and systems has transferred in part to my addiction. I'm just thankful these unrelated lifestyle changes happened in tandem!

anyways, I'm just curious what everyone else has had to give up to afford their addiction. or if they even needed to budget it out at all. how do you afford it? it can be a pretty expensive interest after all

I'd say I've spent around $2,000+/- on knives in a year. I'm building another AR right now so the knife addiction has to take the back seat for now.

I'm pretty sure I've spent close to $1000 on knives and knife related tools at this point... And I've only had the addiction for a few months :o

i am at about $700+ on my knives....dont plan on many more at this point.

Ive spent about $2,000+/- on knives last year and this year I'm at about $1000 so far. Ive been spending more and more on customs instead of production knives and its getting to be pricey. Oh well I guess that's why its called an addiction :D

Collecting can be highly expensive, especially if you've been doing it for years. On the other hand, some of us have amassed quite a bevy of knives that can now be sold to fund other ventures. Needs and wants change over the years, but the addiction continues unabated basically because we are never satisfied with just the 'next' purchase. It is a big, convoluted cycle but eventually we can divest ourselves of knives we no longer need and not feel too bad about it. In my case, I just saved up enough money to purchase the cutlery I prized. These days, I am much more selective in what I buy. Funny how the lure of having the latest and greatest seems to pale after you've been there and done that a thousand times. Getting a package in the mail is always a thriller though!

A lot more than I want to think about........

I'm buying fewer and much better knives tho.

i down graded to this addiction. i left the gun and silencer forums to come here. about two years ago i decided to get a mba and to pay for it out of savings and cashflow. i figured knives would be cheaper. needless to say a damascus sebenza cost more then a glock, which addiction is worse lol.

$8645 on knives.

Overtime pay helps. Stopped buying watches *more expensive hobby for me* and now I buy knives.

I quit smoking. I put the money on a Walmart Visa and spend it on sharp things.

Just an estimate would be $40,000 in the last 8 years. Might be as much as 45 or as little as 35. If I stopped spending on knives I would just find something else to spend money on and at least knives hold their value and some of them appreciate measurably.

i gave up smoking and eating 18 months ago !! smoke free and 180 pounds later i have my life back so i spend that extra cash on my family and my knife /gun hobbies now!

I'm pretty sure I'm under ten grand. Given that I've been in the hobby for close to a decade now that sounds pretty good to me.

Thank you sir. You just made me feel completely justified in my recent purchases. :D

Closer to 1G than two. Other competing interests like post secondary education, repairing old motorcycles, metal detecting, fishing etc. suck up their share as it is.

I have about $6500 worth of knives (current market value), though I didn't pay that. I have been buying/selling/trading a lot recently, trying to thin my collection, and diversify it at the same time, so I don't even want to think about how much money has gone in and out of my account!
