what has your addiction cost you?

I would say over my two year course of buying/selling. I have probably spent $1500-2000 grand in knives. I figure there are worse things I could be blowing my money on. To answer the question. I gave up pro level of yoyoing. A new yoyo would easily cost about $100 dollars. And believe it or not, that is a hobby that quite a few people are involved in. Including manufacturers.

Over the last 20 years probably about $5k-$7k but have traded and sold down to the ones I really want to keep. Mainly because I never got in to customs.

That's not counting the time I was a part time dealer with $20k of knives in stock :)

When I got bit by the bug the first couple of months I spent almost $3000. Then for some strange reason I suddenly lost interest in knives (probably because I diverted my attention to a new hobby), and sold all of them except three. Cool thing was most of the knives I sold I was able to sell it for more than I bought it for.

Not sure if I want to get back into the whole knife collecting thing again but I must say, this hobby makes a lot more sense financially compared to a lot of other hobbies.

Interesting topic. I recently built a spreadsheet documenting all my knives, their condition, how and what they were used for, original price (have most receipts) and what accessories I have with each one... For insurance purposes and incase something happens to me -- my collection is substantial enough that it was a separate line item in my will.

52 knives in total (that were worth documenting) -- total spend was just over $9,600 (this is over about 15 yrs) and the total estimated value (if I were to liquidate) is very close to that amount also ($9,200). Only reason the two figures are so close is that there are 6 or 7 knives that are nearly impossible to find anywhere anymore in mint condition. Could probably be sold at a high asking price.

Cool topic

If I had the money I spent on knives and swords over the last 60 years, I would rank up there with Warren Buffett and Trump :-)

I have been buying for less than a year and my total is really getting up there. I had never added them all up until right now but I am in around $1400 at this point.

Just thinking about this one. Holy mackerel, somebody ... put me out of my misery :D.

In all honesty, it has been a great hobby to me. A couple of years ago I sold about 1/3 of my collection and started a business, but after all this time it is quite clear that it is the people who have been the reason I have stayed in this hobby. Not that I am that good, but because of those people I am a better person.

How about just this weekend....I thought that having my wife and a couple of my kids with me at the Blade Show would curb my spending....wrong. My wallet is beyond empty.

It's cost me as little as possible, all my knives have been excellent deals or finds picked up at fleamarkets, yardsales and estate sales, one of the reasons I collect vintage traditional slipjoints is that they can still be found in collectible/usable condition for a reasonable price if ya hunt around, (at least here in North East PA one of the birth places of the knife industry).

One other thing is this addiction/hobby's been spread out over 35 years so for the most part the cost has been spread out.

I do buy the occasional custom and that's where it can get costly, than again there are a lot of customs on the secondary market that can be had at a savings.

One final thought, there are collectors, people addicted to the wow/gadget factor and accumulators, (like myself), pick a pattern, style scale material or whatever, just try to build a collection and don't just accumulate knives.
