Runningboar has said it numerous times, along with others, that we learn new things in here all the time.

Well how about throwing out some of the ideas and things you have learned while reading the WSS forums? Big stuff, small stuff. Give credit to an individual or everyone. Shleters, fire making, water purification, and of course Knives!

here we go:

Cold Weather: I think it was MattKrissick who posted about keeping your feet warm using your empty backpack. Shove your feet in the backpack for an extra layer against the elements. thanks matt. ( I think that was you).

Bow and Drill: Lots of folk. Doc, Mewolf, Runningboar, RescueMike, and all....sorry if I didn't name others, but, thanks everyone!!

Greased cotton balls is the biggest one I can think of. Of course never let your girlfriend who likes getting deals do the shopping. Now I have greasy pink balls...

...pink was on sale.:o

i have learned all sorts of stuff from this forum as well as a few others...  :D

but the one thing that i have learned, that i take to heart, is the fact that i am TRULY not alone in this world:rolleyes: and there are people that are even more crazy about knives(and gear) than i am......:D

i love the fact that there are so many different folks on here, from all walks of life and we all share a common interest in fine cutlery and wilderness/emergency prepardness.... you guys rock...

cheers.... :D

There isn't enough time or bandwidth to put it all down. Between knives, supplies, packing my rucksack, psk advise, and many... MANY others it would take me awhile.

McDonald's straws (because of their large diameter) stuffed with tinder and crimped stands out though:D

That's a good one too! I could never list everything and all the people for their well thought ideas. Just was thinking if people would mention one or two, we'd build a good list.

All the PSK building threads have me going back over my kits regularly.

Agreed Skunk...... There has been so many, that I'm sure I missed more that half.

Good Thread:thumbup:

P.S. I'm biased.... this is my favorite sub forum for advise:thumbup:

I've learned a lot of different things here, but what sticks out recently is that no matter how you say it, some people just absolutely despise Cold Steel - with a passion. :(

Bwaaaaahaaaa. I may or may not be one of them..... no matter, that was funny as hell:thumbup:

What I take away from this forum is the fact that there are people out there who can survive. I grew up a factory worker city kid, went (light)fishing/hiking a lot in the summer, but most of my time was spent in the city. As I got older I noticed people of all ages were...dumb. They can't read maps, they don't know the sun rises in the east, don't know how to use a knife (or open a SAK for that matter), read/follow directions...if you take them out of their element, they are like infants. I'm just glad to see mankind CAN survive since there are people out there who can make due and have the tools and knowlege to survive.

And I learnt about fatwood; that was cool:D

Lots of "the best place" to get this and that item of gear

Many other things I'm sure, but when you watch a bunch of fora (The guys in the UK assure me that's correct, "fora" :D ), it gets hard to sort out.

I have learned alot of new things, vaseline cotton balls were a big one. Piute deadfall, digging a long deep trench to catch turkeys in. Jeez there's a bunch of things I learned or learned how to do right. And I am sure that wont end any time soon.

I for one, am very glad that I found this forum and the few others that I frequent. Like others, I've learned a lot here from a large number of folks ranging in experience from newcomer to expert and I hope that I was able to share a bit, to help pass it on.

Wow, what haven't I learned here? Most of my knowledge of wilderness survival has been garnered from these forums. The Vaseline cotton balls, all the PSK threads, some really good info on patinas, the acorn whistle trick, wrapping paracord around the sheath of a fixed blade for some extra cordage when it's needed, always carrying a lighter, the Bic+duct-tape thread, magnesium bars, there is way too much to list. I'm going to just go ahead and thank everybody here on the WSS board, you're all great, nice to the new guys, and extremely informative.

I especially like Codger_64's reminiscences, DOC-CANADA's helpful points, and SkunkWerX's great topics and Mora info. (and all the compliments I've gotten on the AUCK, but that's just my human nature speaking) Anyway, thanks, guys, for the great board and awesome community that I'm proud to be a part of.

I've learned that there are many more ways then one for things. Everyone has their own taste, style and view on things, its great. Just when you think you know it all ;)
Where else are you gonna learn so many uses for bike tubing?
Or Trap and shelter making, great stuff :)

And the best thing is theres still more info to come :D

Much like the shotgunning forum I visit, this place has tought me to not only be content with what I have but to practice more often with it.

Buy all the knives and gear you want. You can't buy skill. That only comes from practicing.

I found the Urban Survival threads a wealth of info as well. Planning bug-in/bug-out routes, etc.

I've learned a lot of nifty tricks and ideas, fire starting is one area that comes to mind, things that I now use regularly: PJ cotton balls, natural tinder, magnesium fire starters...friction fire by bow and drill is still escaping me, but I'm closer to it than I was three months ago ;)

I think the greatest thing I've learned here is the general sense of being prepared, being aware of my situation and thinking ahead to what I might need. Everybody here has questioned that or offered advice in one way or another. I think WSS is a better than average sub-forum with very experienced and knowledgable people ready and willing to share what they know. Some, like me, are computer and backyard adventurers while others actually go deep into the bush and practice what they talk about. A great forum, thanks to all of you.

I have learned of a variety of new ways to start fires, the difference between Aluminum shavings and magnesium shavings (thanks guys!), and that I could run into one of y'all on my next trip! Hope to see you out there!
