what if the military had a flipper?

yes. it also has a g10 handle and a large blade. look at the ergonomics on that this blade. it has thick steel liners. at around $50 its one of the best deals around inmop.

Yes I'm sure it is a fine blade. Kershaw has built a good reputation by putting out good products.

I would like to seperate your comments and address seperately but my work computer isn't behaving properly so it is bunching all together, sorry for the difficulty in reading this may cause. My analogy wasn't brand vs. brand but idea vs. idea. I'll expand on that at a later time if necessary. Flipper for arthritis, yes I can see that. I only know of one knife person with arthritis, he prefers the hole most likely, but one person doesn't count for the whole. Yes I can see some may prefer that mode. I'm guessing the hole adds 1/4-1/2" to width of a blade vs. a knob or disk, and the flipper would also add 1/4-1/2" to the width (depending on the model) so you get an extra 1/2"-1" of width with both devices....yikes in my book.Personally I like that the flipper adds a built in guard when open, I prefer a guard to a finger choil in general for knives. However in folding knives, I find the flipper adds in inadvertantly open the blade at undesired times.Correct, I can deny the wide market for the flipper and I do own some CLB Boker designs with that feature.

I think you bring up a good point about the width issue, seeing as how the holes make the blades wide enough as they are. And we've seen flippers with thumbstuds, but I've yet to see a hole with a flipper. That may very well be a large turn off for people in an unexpected way(except by you of course;)). I haven't had much experience with flippers, seeing as how Spyderco keeps taking all of my knife money, so I really don't know much about inadvertant openings and how much of a problem they cause in with the flipper favorers (except for my Camillus Heat that opened when I dropped it on the floor. But I think it was more about the AO and less about the flipper. Just my guess). It might be a good question for me to ask over in the Kershaw forums.

For the idea vs idea, are you suggesting it as a bad thing (assuming that they could pull off a fliper/hole combo without width concerns)? If so, other than the width, why would it be a bad thing?

For some reason, today the picture above works and I see a different flipper than the traditional thin piece of metal sticking out one. That seems to change the game, at least for folks who want function over those pesky looks in regards to adding it too a hole, and discounting the width. I might be coming around the more we talk about it.

I believe the other issue was the risk of it opening more often when not desired, but this new rounded/finger choil style flipper of Kershaw's might change that significantly. I deliberately stay away from Kershaw, because if I look to closely I'd be tempted to purchase some. :D

go ahead and buy a couple. they have some good stuff as well and their asking prices are always so low that i sometimes feel like im ripping them off. they have features on many of their knives that spyderco just doesnt use in their designs, like good assisted opening and good flipper designs.

this one is another great kershaw. a g10 handle speedbump that has very smooth assisted opening and uses the stud lock. dont narrow your options when there is so much good stuff to choose from out there. plus, kershaw and spyderco have collaborated before, they are cool with eachother. nothing wrong with buying both companies products, especially since they both make different stuff.
