What is a good knife for chopping?

Just about any Busse over 6 inches. Fallkniven A2 is a good one also. However, if an axe is practical then by all means use one instead of a knife.

Like, from a survival-type point of view, or specifically for regular chopping chores like firewood?

For dedicated wood-chopping tasks, an axe or a hatchet is by far and away your best bet. For general camp-type chopping tasks, a machete will do just fine. I happen to prefer a Kukri, and have used mine to chop small branches and whatnot with perfect satisfaction.

Survival. I know this will sound silly, but I saw Bear Gryhlls :o chopping branches with his knife so I just wondered. He was probably across the street from a hotel, but I have seen some on here reference chopping.

Pretty much any fixed blade knife with a fairly heavy blade can be used for chopping if that's all you have. Blades with heavy tips such as the khukri will chop much better than a knife that balances at the guard. A good quality, properly sharpened axe or even hatchet will do a better job of chopping, since that is what they are specialized for, but they are not as versatile as a good knife.

I use option 2, the hatchet, when I want to chop.

What are you needing to chop? If it's for survival, you can get away with a smaller knife to save weight and use batoning techniques. You shouldn't need to fell any trees in a survival situation, just make fire and a debris shelter, maybe some light trapping, etc.

If you are in a densely wooded or extremely cold place, you'd need an axe anyway.

Bang for the buck I would say the Browning Crowell/Barker Competition knife. Noss seems to think highly of it and its a lot less than a Busse. I have a few Busse's now and I still plan on getting the Crowell/ Barker

is this one of them haha for real threads?
If it were survival, use what ever can chop
It your camping get an axe.
