what is a good knife to give a 12 year old boy?

Learn to learn. The knife I posted was a Victorinox Recruit. Certainly not a toy, and only it's scales, toothpick and apex of the tweezer are plastic, as is the case with the vast majority of SAKs. Its tools that are the same in number of other number of Victorinox.

Not every knife can carve that.

Yep, sorry, I was talking about a different picture.

No offense, but why would the mother of a 12 year old boy take advice from a 13 year old boy?

Because he said he has been around knives at a young age and has the experience of a 18-20y/o that had there first knife at 10 or 12. I'm thirteen and have been around knives since 3 years old which means I have been responsible with knives for 10 years.

To answer the OPs question, I would suggest an opinel for a folder or an IZULA/becker bk14 (which ever is in her price range) for a fixed blade.

good luck!

Spyderco dragonfly or Buck vantage select small for a locking blade.
Case Mini sodbuster for a slipjoint.
Esee izula 2 for a fixed blade.

The mini sodbuster was my first knife that my dad bought be when I was 8 or 9.

It's wonderful to know it all at 13. lol

you're too young. carrying a knife as a 13 year old is insane.

I am sorry that your 13 year old child isn't responsible enough to carry a knife.

My 14 year old son's current favorites are his ZT0350ts, ZT0550, or his Spyderco s30v Native (his first super steel modern folder he got years ago). Always carried with a Leatherman Blast.

I was not trying to infer that at all, just answer you're question. He has about as much experience as a 18-20 y/o man that got his first knife at 10 or so.

Sorry that I came off all know-it-all most of you guys have 40+ years of experience

If you are looking for a multitool, i would suggest a small leatherman like a squirt or juice. I have a 10 year old brother that is getting into knives (my fault :D) and he likes the different blades for the saw and plain edge
If you are looking for a knife knife, maybe a smaller kershaw like a leek or skyline? probably the skyline because it isn't assisted but both are excellent smaller knives (both have 3 inch blades)

At 13, I had a Victorinox Huntsman. Fast forward two years, the collection has grown quite a lot, but the Vic will always have a warm spot in my heart. So many memories in that wonderful little knife.

Also, to people suggesting fixed blades, I really don't think it's appropriate for a 13 year old to be waking around with a big ol' chopper. Stick to a SAK and as he gets older, his knives will get progressively bigger.

OP, if you want, I'll send you one of my countless slipjoints to see if he likes it.

Very very rarely do I run across a 18-20 year old man, most ~19 year olds are still kids, as you grow older you'll realize that yourself.

Having and using a chopper is different from taking one on the bus. I still respectfuly suggest a Mora or BK14.

Whichever knife you choose give him my sympathies along with it for having to grow up in a world where ANYONE let alone members of a knife forum would ever consider things as ridiculous as knife appearance, a twelve year old being too young, or not letting him use it alone. I suppose the fact that I could and did carry use and even work on my knives in shop class makes me an old fart but the lessons I learned from being an ER veteran several times by his age to have minor, yet deep enough for a few sutures, wounds sewn shut have and will last better than any rule can teach and kow towing to idiotic rules and opinions we of all people should know better than to do anything but flout will serve only to teach his generation to accept a continuing loss of freedom.
