Very well thought-out thread (*and choices), in my very humble opinion, Slice O Life Slice O Life . 👍

I wanted to be cynical when I saw the thread. However, after reading your post, and reviewing your voting choices a few times, my pre-set cynicism softened a bit. I thought about my "collection" and how any one of us could choose several options from your given choices.

A knife can be a reminder of adventures past and a call to those of the future.

It can also create something of value.

cutting TOOL. Tool is capitalized because my pocket knife is just as likely to clean batterie terminals, spread mustard, peanut butter or jelly, scrap ice off a windshield, flip eggs in the frying pan, pull that wrench closer that I dropped while under the car that is 2" out of reach, etc. It sure ain't art or a toy fidget or otherwise. As for self defense I have better options, but I guess it would do in a pinch. Though from personal observations blunt force trauma (a rock in a sock) is more effective the a shank or shive.

‘Investment’ for me in the sense that you’re purchasing a tool right now that can make life easier for you many times down the road, i.e. not struggling with opening boxes or preparing food. In terms of buying with the intention of flipping it later, knives probably wouldn’t be my first choice.

‘Cutting tool’ is arguably the fundamental purpose of the blade, the ‘knifeness of the knife’ for the philosophy aficionados out there. It is from that starting point that the blade can serve as other things, such as a survival or self-defense implement. Take away the cutting tool aspect, and everything else in the list falls flat. I would not use a knife that cannot cut to sustain myself nor pass it on to my descendants.

Really, there are many types of knives to be used as tools for different purposes.

I use around 3-4 inch for general purpose, my EDC had to be used to gut a deer...oh sorry for not being PC I meant "Field Dress" the deer getting the guts out and stuff ya know.

My SP-53 I used for clearing a trail through the swamp to follow the blood trail to get that deer I murdered for its meat. Oops..."Harvested" for you sensitive PC freakazoids.

I used a butter knife after the burning of bread for toast.

As I said, there are different knives for different jobs.

A knife is simply something that you will never find me to be without...

Thanks brother!

I voted "cutting tool" of course, but in addition to whatever "cutting tool" knife I'm carrying, I always have an Alox SAK with me. The SAK probably tightens more screws, and pries more stuff than the real tools in my tool boxes. It's handy & it seems like I'm always getting it out to fiddle with something.

I voted for about 4 different options. Cutting tool, survival option, fidget toy and hand-me-down, I think they were. Different knives have different degrees of each aspect to them. For example, my Native 5 is an awesome cutting tool, fidget tool and survival option, but not much of a hand-me-down.

I gave away a lot of RD6s, SP-10s, SP-53s, SP-8 and RD Tantos to relatives and friends for a lot of those listed on the poll. The RD6d for general purpose blades, SP-10s the general purpose big blade purpose blade to be abused when used. SP-53 to those who needed a good short heavy machete as the SP-10 could do, RD Tantos for the multipurpose medium chopper yet still could do things the RD6s only a bit less not as fuzzy feather sticky, but it worked. SP-8 is great for its "Non Knifey Look" and chiselly look that made it a great car and urban setting tool. My little brother got my OKC Vulpine I found as its nice and knifey and 5160 tough, he's put a real handle on it, a gift when his son was born. I gave him a lot of tools and knives, some he gave to our other little brothers as he felt they needed them.

A lot of tools for different uses. Yep I had to use a few as pry bars for emergencies myself even.

Most used atleast one to get them out of a situation or two, from needing a slicey tool to a brute force prybar, they probably don't get used much, but from what they tell me, they are glad its where they keep it. Mostly car, bug out bag or with the camping/hunting/outdoorwanderings bag. Or just in the drawer or knife rack/block, they just seem glad to have such a tool around when its needed.

Knives many a tool for many a job, even if its for an emergency job its not intended for. Main reason I like the 5160 steels myself, never broke one, bent a few but they sprang back to form.
