What is a lanyard for on a pocket knife?

The lanyards on my knives are to help me get them out of my back pocket and out of the sheath respectively. I carry my Zaan at work in my back pocket. Technically we aren't supposed to have a knife but my direct supervisors realize the need.

The lanyard on my Bradford helps me get it out of the sheath easier.

A lanyard can keep a person from losing the knife when dropped or can be brightly colored to make the knife easier to find when dropped. ;) It can also be used to hang a knife around your neck when needed. I use a long lanyard that can be shortened with a chain knot.

I have them on a few knives. Makes it easier, with some knives, to get out of my pocket.
On others it just looks cool......I like the hangman's knot with leather laces.

Mel Pardue is definitely not an idiot. Have some respect.
Well I have no clue who he is, and this knife is the only one designed by him that I have seen ( afaik )
Based on this knife, my ruling stands. The lanyard hole placement on this knife is moronic, and only an idiot would put it there.

What am I supposed to respect, a major oversight in the design of a knife ?

Might want to look into him. And that knife is one of the most iconic in the industry. Calling him an idiot is very ignorant.

That Griptilian hole placement is not ideal for sure, but is easily overcome with a longer starting loop that lets the knotted portion of the lanyard fall to the end of the knife. I have a few knives that I use the back post for the lanyard like Nfd. Keeps it way out of the way.

I like lanyards for extraction, but also to dress up and personalize favorite knives. I like the look of a complimentary or contrasting cord and bead. No skulls, demons, or dragons for me, though....

Fob and Dummy cords are not the same thing.

One looks cool.

The other prevents loss.

Maybe a quick bit of reading before posting would help you avoid posts like this one, or the one yesterday claiming all SOG and the RAT folders were made in China.

Unless one doesnt mind being called out, its worth it.

And, yes, unless you can stick your arm or head through it, its a fob.

I'm usually a stickler for proper nomenclature and am extremely pleased that what's on my knives are not dummy cords. Despite what I attach to my knives being more accurately described as fobs, I think I'll stick with popular usage and they'll still be lanyards to me. Thanks for the clarification, though.

A lanyard can be used to secure and retain a knife in a sheath or attach it to yourself to guard against loss .

Of course, you are free to call them whatever you want, but it isnt a question of what it is more or less accurate to call them...they arent lanyards unless they go around your neck, shoulder, or wrist. Not "less accurate" to call them lanyards.

First of all I just wanna say that I was obviously wrong, but I wasn't spreading false information or anything and me being wrong about something shouldn't he a big deal.

As far as this knife designer is concerned I'm sure he's actually a very smart man, but nobody is perfect 100% of the time and this knife seems to be one of those times. Many people may like this knife, but I'm not one of those people.
I'm no trying to offend anyone who likes this knife or designer, but I just don't like it and think the hole placement was a huge oversight .

Do I actually think this guy is an idiot ? Of course not, it was just sort of a figure of speech to express what I consider a design flaw.

...and I referred to myself as a stickler. Sheesh.

Again, it is the most purchased knife from one of the top 3 American knife companies. Further, if you don't think he is in idiot it would be best to not call him one twice. Sorry but that is not a figure of speech. That is calling a well respected and very popular knife maker an idiot. It is good that you admit your wrong but stick to that admission. No need to back peddle on it.

I've been working on the crown and diamond knot tonight. I think I got it down!

I think most people put one on because they think it looks cool.

I put one on my latest because it makes it easier to get out of my pocket sheath. Just fit my first finger in the loop and out it comes.

That lump on the back of the OP's knife would do the opposite.

FYI I was admitting to being wrong about the sog / rat1 China thing, not about thinking that this knife has a major design flaw.

I probably shouldn't have called this guy an idiot, so I'm sorry for calling him an idiot because he messed up on one knife.
