What is a lanyard for on a pocket knife?

Thanks! I know you wanted the discussion to be more about what people do with their lanyards/fobs and less about nomenclature.

Do you have a preferred technique for a fixed blade chopper lanyard. Hooked on the thumb and around the palm?

Nope, sorry I have no technique as I have no fixed blade chopper. Chopping duties for me are relegated to hatchets and axes, though I have been eyeing a Woodman's Pal. I'm not a camper, per se, so I can have more and larger gear. Our woodland activity is mostly relegated to our acreage at our Vermont place where we have our Ranger, logging arch, tackle, saws, and other gear at our disposal. As a folder guy, I'll have a couple on me, but will usually carry something like my orange Endura--easy to find if the you-know-what gets snagged and yanks the knife out should I forget to tuck in the cord.

Got a pic?

I have some but they are really bad :(

Nice " lanyard pulls " 👍
( since the usage of the word is changing, I think the dictionary should add lanyard pulls and change transitional lanyards to lanyard loops )

Would be best if they checked with a proper authority before making any changes.

And, yeah, nice pic, Joe!:thumbup:

034.jpg I just plain old like the bling factor of the whatchamacallits. Just my lousy taste I guess. I put then on for looks and really not for function. My bad. And yes, I have 2 more coming for the Rat's without them.

Don't really care what they are called, I just like how much easier it is to get the knives out of my pocked when wearing gloves.........I think they look pretty cool too!!

Here's a lanyard pull I just made for my vic recruit to help draw it from my pocket since it got hard to remove after tightening my suspension clip.

( they've been having a bad year, but maybe the 9'ers can win their last game of the season )

I'm going to call them lanyard pulls from now on, because everyone calls them lanyards ( I feel that they are now a form of lanyard ) and they're used to pull knives from your pocket.
Regardless of what people call them, it's known what is being talked about, so I'm certainly not worried.

but everyone doesn't call them lanyards and they already have a name.

Words have meanings. What is the difficulty using fob when referencing knife or key fobs? I use knife lanyards when I feel the need for security on the boat and fobs to pull the knife from my pocket. Some of my knife fobs can also be untied and become lanyards or emergency lashings....

🤔

They may meet the technical definition of a watch fob, but watch fobs always have a way of attaching them to you which these do not do.

I think the best thing to classify them as is a pull ( just like a zipper pull ), and since they're attached to a lanyard hole I will call them lanyard pulls.

.
Wrong.

When its becomes evident, that one might not have all facts in regards to a certain subject, there comes a time, when one might rethink ones posts......or at least not make up new words;)

Just saying ...

I'm gonna call that metal thing on that SAK a "pocket dangler" and the red, tan, and white cord thing a "knife tassel". :D

As to the original question, "what is a lanyard for on a pocket knife?" It is to prevent loss of the knife from dropping it while in use. Knife tassels are for decoration, just like those things that some people hang off of drawer pulls (also called knobs or handles).

The fob on my key ring has a battery in it and I use it to lock, unlock, and start my car.

Definately like me some knife noose as well. But only on certain paterns such as a scout pattern or something with a bale
